Measles in Texas: waning vaccination and a stark warning for public health
In late January, 2025, a measles outbreak primarily affecting unvaccinated school-aged children emerged in Gaines County, Texas, USA, near the New Mexico border. As of March 7, 2025, 228 measles cases have been confirmed—198 in Texas and 30 in neighbouring New Mexico—primarily in children and adolescents under 18 years. So far, there have been 23 hospitalisations and two fatalities.1,2 Additionally, since the start of the outbreak, measles cases have been detected in multiple states across the USA.
