Our Stirling #NewYearPlantHunt returned a whopping 53 species in flower! Way beyond expectations given ice, snow & sub-zero temps. Stopping clock for coffee essential

Highlights included Selfheal, Small Toadflax, 3 Snowdrop species & Hare's-foot Clover, & the enthusiasm of so many fellow botanists!
Stirling New Year Plant Hunt team, holding much needed coffees and standing in front of a large sign saying 'Stirling' - conclusive evidence that we had indeed found the right place. An idiot lying on frosty frozen mud, examining Common Whitlowgrass (Erophila verna) flowers to check if they were countable (they were!). Bramble the dog lies down in solidarity next to me. Thanks to Tracy Rich for the photo. The team surrounding a Holly (Ilex aquifolium) tree on Stirling Back Walk, determined to find an open flower - eventually we managed it, just! This pathway under the old town walls is a sun trap and always good for flowering plants in the winter. Thanks to Tracy Rich for the photo. Finally, Smooth Sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) in flower. One Hunter gets caught up in the moment of triumph for the camera!

16 Dec 1953 saw the official commencement of shaft sinking at one of the then National Coal Board's Scottish Area "super-pits" - Monktonhall Colliery. This sketch is by the Board's architect Egon Riss FRIBA. A productive pit from 1965 until 1989/97 it was later demolished. @c20society.bsky.social

In the years immediately following the nationalisation of the British Coal Industry and the formation of the National Coal Board, the new undertaking were faced with a massive task of improving the industry, making up for years of decline and fragmentation, and so improving output, sales and working conditions. One huge part of this task was the development of new 'super-pits' taking the advantage of gaining access to new areas of coal fields and using the latest technology and methods, such as mechanised faces. In the Scottish Division many of the projects were the work of an emigre architect and designer Egon Riss. This drawing, from the booklet issued to commemorate the start of the sinking of the shafts of the new colliery, shows the layout and architecture that is typical of Riss's work. Monktonhall was a new deep colliery designed to gain access to seams previously untapped by the extensive existing Midlothian collieries. It was the second major scheme in this area, complimenting the new Bilston Glen pit a little to the south west. The colliery went into production in 1965 and was for many years an extremely productive pit. It was closed by British Coal, successors to the NCB, in 1989 and despite an attempt by private owners who re-started production in 1994 it closed entirely in 1997 and was demolished.
