Hi there! I'm some schmuck who likes drawing and reading comics.

I'm the author of 'Because I'm Depressed', a black comedy webcomic that has been running since 2013: bcdecomic.com

And I also make nonfiction comics about history, science, democracy, and social justice: comicschronicle.com

Because I'm Depressed #599: "On Departures, Pt. 7"
#becauseimdepressed #comics

bcdecomic.com/comics/599/
An eight panel comic.

Panel one: Diego walks into the living room. He looks over and sees Chel entering the apartment, closing the front door behind her with a sullen look on her face.

Panel two: Diego says, “Hey pumpkin. How’d it go?” Chel approaches, her head down, and replies, “It went well. I saw her off.”

Panel three: Diego, looking concerned, begins to ask, “Are you..?” Chel, walking past him, says, “I’m fine. Just fine.” Panel four: Diego places his hand on Chel’s shoulder, and she stops.

Panel five: The two stand in silence. Chel is facing away from Diego, frowning.

Panel six: The silence continues. Diego’s hand is still on Chel’s shoulder.

Panel seven: Chel brushes Diego’s hand away.

Panel eight: Chel walks away in silence, a single tear rolling down her cheek. Diego watches her leave, a sad look on his face.

The only kind of climate change I can approve of 😌
Two big red cats circle a terrified hog encased in ice. The cat's tails are flames and melt the ice partially, exposing some pig butt and giving it a singe. "Uh-oh Step-Pig, I'm Stuck...!" ok I made the joke for you so you don't have to. Hot ham smoke emits from the pig and spells "BECOME AN" and melted ice on the bottom spells "ICE-FREE ZONE"

Ayyy, congrats!! That’s great news!

Because I'm Depressed #598: "On Departures, Pt. 6"
#becauseimdepressed #comics

bcdecomic.com/comics/598/
A seven-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel's car is at the drop-off area of the airport. Travelers can be seen ambling about with their luggage; in the distance a plane can be seen taking off. Yadira says, "Thank you so much for dropping me off, Chel." Chel replies, "Yeah, you're welcome. It's no problem at all."

Panel two: Inside the car, Chel asks, "Need help with your luggage?" Yadira, unbuckling her seatbelt and smiling weakly, says, "No, I think I've got it."

Panel three: Chel and Yadira sit in silence, frowning. Panel four: The two look at each other somberly.

Panel five: Yadira lunges out of her seat, hugging Chel tightly.

Panel six: Yadira, tears in her eyes, says, "I'm gonna miss you so much."

Panel seven: Chel, holding Yadira and looking at her sadly, replies, "...I'm gonna miss you too, Yadi."

as a neurodivergent & also weird kid school was hell for me, though these days I struggle to remember the names of all the teachers who bullied me. But the three that treated me like a person have never left me. Now more than ever, I hope you all try your best to stay unsquishable!

Written 55 years ago, Schulz's heartfelt clarity cuts through the noise, even today.

h/t @tisserand.bsky.social
Scan of a typed letter from 1970, from Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, addressed to "Joel Lipton, 622 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90210"

It reads:

"Dear Joel:

I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen than it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call "American Virtues" who lack this faith in our country.

I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities.

Sincerely yours,

Charles M. Schulz"

I think now is a good time to re-post this clip from my Halloween vid last year. Shows like Dead End will always be important. Representation will always be important. Especially in a world where hate and bigotry continue to persist.

Because I'm Depressed #597: "On Departures, Pt. 5"
#becauseimdepressed #comics

bcdecomic.com/comics/597/
A nine-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel is standing beside Ben's car, parked on the street in front of Yadira's house. Chel watches silently as Yadira hugs her parents goodbye.

Panel two: Yadira loads a large suitcase into the car's trunk, which already contains another suitcase, her backpack, and her purse.

Panel three: Yadira puts on her seatbelt in the passenger seat of the car. Chel is sitting in the driver's seat, her hands on the wheel. The two smile at each other.

Panel four: The car drives off down the suburban street.

Panel five: Inside the car, Yadira looks down at the dashboard and asks, "Does this radio work?" Chel smiles and says, "Yeah, go for it."

Panel six: Yadira reaches down and turns on the radio. It blares the lyrics, "If you leave me now, you'll take away the biggest part of me, ooh-ooh-hoo, no, baby, please don't go." Chel and Yadira's smiles fade away. Panel seven: Yadira switches the station, and the song changes to, "Don't say goodbye, ‘cause I don't wanna hear those words tonight." Chel and Yadira frown.

Panel eight: Yadira changes the station again. The lyrics become, "You didn't have to go, you didn't have to go, you didn't have to go-o, ohhh." Chel and Yadira's frowns deepen.

Panel nine: The car drives down a busy highway towards the city; a road sign displays "City Center" and "Airport" alongside an arrow pointed forward and to the right. Inside the car, Chel opines, "You know, silence is good too." Yadira responds, "Agreed."

A seventeen-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel is sitting on the living room sofa. She turns around with her arm over the back of the sofa to look at Diego as he walks behind her. She asks, “Hey dad, do you know where Ben is?” Diego replies, “I dunno. Probably in a brothel somewhere. Why?”

Panel two: Chel turns back around to look at her phone, saying, “I want to ask him if I can borrow his car on Friday.” Diego responds, “Borrow his CAR? What for?”

Panel three: Chel, leaning over her phone, answers, “Yadi’s flying out that day. I offered to drop her off at the airport.”

Panel four: Diego scratches his chin and says, “Ah, right. You mentioned she was moving away.”

Panel five: Diego asks, “You, uh… You holding up okay, pumpkin?” Chel scowls and sarcastically replies, “Yeah, I’m doing GREAT. I LOVE that my best friend is moving to the opposite side of the country and that I won’t see her again for who knows how long.” Panel six: Diego awkwardly rubs the back of his neck and says, “I, uhh… I get it, Chel. It’s HARD when friends move away.”

Panel seven: Chel, still staring at her phone, bitterly asks, “What would YOU know about that?”

Panel eight: Diego stares at Chel in silence, a slight frown on his face.

Panel nine: Diego looks to the side and says, “Well… I was eight when your grandma and I moved to this state.”

Panel ten: Diego continues, “I’d spent my entire childhood in California. I had a lot of friends down there, friends I’d known for almost my WHOLE LIFE up to that point. And I had to leave ‘em all behind.”

Panel eleven: Diego concludes, “I didn’t even get to say GOODBYE to most of them.” Chel lowers her phone, the scowl fading from her face as she glances empathetically at her dad. Panel twelve: The two remain silent, as Diego looks off into the distance sadly.

Panel thirteen: Diego, perking back up, raised his hands and says, “But, you know, the important thing is that I got over it eventually!”

Panel fourteen: Diego grins and continues, “And if it hadn’t been for the move I never would’ve met your mo—“ Chel stands up with a frown and cuts him off with, “Yeah. Got it. Thanks for the pep talk.”

Panel fifteen: Chel walks off towards her room, ignoring Diego as he says, “It’ll… you know, get better! And all that.” Panel sixteen: Chel is gone. Diego stands alone in the living room with a frown.

Panel seventeen: Diego lowers his head and sighs somberly.
