He cubierto todos los golpes de Estado en Venezuela así como todas las elecciones desde 1993. Es la primera vez, obviamente, que debemos cubrir una extracción de un presidente de facto así como la transición interna de poder. Sin embargo, hay hechos que creo nos pueden permitir entender algunos eventos. 1. Desde que empezó la ofensiva contra Maduro ( 7 de agosto de 2025) se planteó la ventana de oportunidad para una negociación bilateral con EEUU. 2. La tesis de la sucesión de Delcy fue filtrada y probada como globo de ensayo. Los hermanos Rodríguez trabajan en combo, aunque el más ambicioso es Jorge, Delcy es considerada una izquierdista caviar a quien Chávez mantuvo lejos, pero esa es una historia de ellos. 3. La cúpula del chavismo gobernante siempre ha logrado equilibrar sus diferencias personales por una sólida vocación de poder. La dupla Maduro-Flores fue implacable, incluso con el operador financiero que era Tarek El Aissami. 4. Luego del fraude del 28 de julio de 2024 Jorge Rodríguez se tuvo que replegar y el control lo tomó Diosdado Cabello, quien luego de años de no tener cargo en el gabinete asumió el Ministerio de Interior, encargado de la represión postelectoral. Cabello, aunque militar de origen, tiene más vocación policial que otra cosa. También es un superviviente que logró manejar sus discrepancias con Maduro ( detestaba las payasadas de este y lo tenía en baja estima). 5. La inquina entre Cabello y Flores era real. Pero eso es un rasgo de ella que quitaba del camino de Maduro a cualquier rival. 6. Rodríguez siempre siguió en sus trece, especialmente en la apertura y sostenimiento de un canal con la administración Trump ( a través de su amistad con Grenell que viene desde los diálogos de México). Jorge Rodríguez también ha sido el interlocutor para las negociaciones y excarcelaciones. En Venezuela cada grupo de poder tiene a sus presos. Rodríguez es el intermediador con los llamados " normalizadores". 7. Falta el elemento militar, pero eso sigue siendo un archipiélago. Ellos no quieren mojarse, es decir no van a reprimir, pero la cúpula tiene negocios que no quiere perder. De todas maneras son los que sostienen al régimen. Eso queda más que evidenciado con la extracción de Maduro. 8. Ahora bien. Anoche, el mismo TSJ que dijo que Maduro había ganado la elección del 28 de julio de 2024, ha decretado que Delcy Rodríguez asuma la presidencia temporal de Venezuela ante la ausencia forzosa del presidente. Estas palabras no son casuales. La forma permite no declarar ausencia absoluta y por tanto no seguir la norma constitucional que obliga a convocar elecciones en un plazo de 30 días. 9. Aunque estamos en un evento inédito ya hemos pasado por otros que permitieron la toma de decisiones para garantizar la permanencia del régimen. El primero que me viene a la cabeza es el golpe de Estado de 2002 contra Chávez. El mandatario se entregó a los militares alzados y les dijo: ahora el problema es de ustedes porque yo no he renunciado. En este caso, Maduro, aunque de facto, es un presidente en manos de otro gobierno. No ha renunciado y la narrativa chavista es que está secuestrado. El segundo hecho fue a partir de diciembre de 2012 cuando un Chávez moribundo seguía como presidente.

Here's a bit I wrote back in July about Trump, war, and Benjamin. It's supposed to be part of a forthcoming roundtable on Trumpian Aesthetics, but between the writing the publishing, all the predictions have come true or worse.
In the epilogue to the artwork essay Benjamin reaches a conclusion I still find harrowing, the third act twist we all knew was coming: “All efforts to aestheticize politics culminate in one point. That one point is war. War, and only war, makes it possible to set a goal for mass movements on the grandest scale while preserving traditional property relations.” Yet if our aestheticized politics is already in lockstep with a politicized aesthetics, what becomes of the march to war? I think it partakes of the kayfabe of the administration at its most winky. The biggest wink, ironically enough, comes with the loud declaration that we actually are on the verge of a revolution in “traditional property relations”—Biden’s IRA, Mamdani’s victory, Cookie Monster learning to share. But in regard to the pervasive violence all we hear is po-faced denial: The genocide in Gaza is not war; the precision attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and trans prisoners are not war; the mass production of statelessness, of human life beyond the reach of “due process” is not war; the “show of force” in L.A.’s McArthur Park was not war. Who knows what will become of the billions pouring into ICE in our Big Beautiful Enabling Act, but that won’t be war either.
