After March 31, 2026, MSP-funded gender- affirming lower surgeries will no longer be available at GrS Montreal. Gender- affirming lower surgeries will continue to be available through the Gender Surgery Program (GSPBC) in Vancouver . T he information within this document , which explains the closure, is specific to individuals seeking vaginoplasty and vulvoplasty surgeries. This follows a previous closure to the GrS Montreal pathway for phalloplasty and metoidioplasty surgeries , which continue to be available at GSPBC. The Purpose of this Guide This guide explains how these changes may affect your access to care , including: • What happens in different situations, such as if you are seeking a referral to GrS Montreal or waiting for surgery there; and • Who to contact for more information about the surgical pathway revisions. Information About Different Situations I HAVE ALREADY BEEN REFERRED TO GRS MONTREAL . If you have a complete referral to GrS Montreal by March 31, 2026, you can continue your care there without interruption. A complete referral means: • A completed surgical readiness assessment from an approved assessor AND • A referral to GrS Montreal from your primary care provider. GrS Montreal will request additional documentation from you and your primary care provider following the receipt of your referral. These documents can be completed after March 31, 2026, and will not impact your ability to access care at GrS Montreal. If you’re not sure whether you have already been referred to Gr S Montreal, ask your primary care provider to confirm that your referral and surgical readiness assessment have been sent and received. ALREADY HAVE A SURGERY DATE AT G R S M ONTREAL . Your surgery date at GrS Montreal will not be cancelled, and your surgical plan will stay the same. I HAVE NOT YET BEEN REFERRED FOR SURGERY . Until March 31, 2026, you can choose to be referred to either GSPBC or GrS Montreal. Starting April 1, 2026, all new referrals will go to GSPBC. Visit Vagina & vulva construction | Trans Care BC for more information about being referred for surgery. I NEED A REVISION . • If you had your initial surgery at GrS Montreal: Until March 31, 2026, if you had your surgery at GrS Montreal and need a revision or repair surgery, you will be referred to GrS Montreal. After March 31, 2026, if you had your surgery at GrS Montreal and need a revision or repair, you will receive care at GSPBC where medically appropriate. In most cases, revisions can be performed in BC. If the GSPBC assessment shows a medically necessary reason why the revision needs to be seen by the original surgeon, GSPBC will refer you to GrS Montreal. • If you had your initial surgery at GSPBC: You will be referred to GSPBC, and there will be no change to your care. I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT MY REFERRAL .
