This ceremonial sleigh belonged to Queen Luise of Prussia and her husband Friedrich Wilhelm III.
It is a richly carved Baroque‑Revival showpiece, combining virtuoso woodwork with emblematic Prussian motifs in a warm green‑and‑gold palette.

The sleigh is located in the coach house of Paretz Palace near Potsdam, the royal couple’s country residence, and can be visited. The sleigh body is carved as a powerful, prancing horse, its neck arched and chest armoured with scrolling foliage, shells, and acanthus ornament that echo late Baroque court taste. The runners rise into tall, scrolling prows, one surmounted by a dramatic eagle with outstretched wings, reinforcing the impression of movement and royal prestige. The carving depth, undercut details around the mane and harness, and the applied ornamental masks on the runners suggest the work of a court‑level workshop accustomed to ceremonial vehicles and state furniture. The dominant tones are warm brown wood enriched with extensive gilding, especially on the harness, decorative scrolls, and borders of the sleigh body, which would have shimmered in candlelight or winter sun and underlined the association with royal splendour. The seating area is upholstered in a vivid, velvety green that contrasts strongly with the gold and reddish‑brown horse, a pairing traditionally associated in Prussian court interiors with dignity, hope, and renewal. Subtle darker glazing on the gilded areas and the slightly muted, olive‑leaning shade of green give the object an aged, patinated character rather than the look of a newly restored showpiece. The horse imagery evokes dynastic strength and chivalric kingship, qualities that Frederick William III sought to project during the turbulent Napoleonic era, while the proud bird on the prow recalls the Prussian eagle without copying a heraldic shield directly. For Queen Luise, celebrated as a moral and emotional figurehead of the Prussian people, such a sleigh would have symbolised both domestic intimacy—private winter outings as a couple, and the public role of embodying the monarchy’s resilience, with the lush green interior suggesting personal warmth set within a framework of golden state grandeur.
