It doesn't count anything; it doesn't read anything either. It's a text predictor. It's extruding something that looks like a response to the type of question being asked. That's it, that's all it's doing.

I encourage my students to use past exam papers, and then to create their own exam questions as part of their revision. The idea that they can outsource all their thinking to a glorified auto complete is just... I can't even.

I had a conversation once while on an overseas recruitment trip, with a family who were very keen to send their 14-year-old to us; other side of the world, second language, but their kid was clever and precocious. I point blank said we would not be doing that because it was very bad for the child.

This seems like a terrible idea. At 18, kids are mostly just about ready to start living somewhat independently, and university is a great way to give them that opportunity but with guardrails. This kid is not ready for that.
