Mostly music, but also sports. Also a decent bit of book talk, outdoorsy stuff, etc. Not FJM.

My teams: Falcons, Hawks, Blue Jays, Atlanta United, PAOK, Alabama, UAB
I got a $220 refund check today from the dentist for overcharging me.

Former UAB great Yaxel Lindeborg having himself a solid night against Auburn.

WEEN
Pure Guava
(1992)

The album that got me hooked on Ween and is still my favorite 30+ years later. It’s bonkers to think this was on a major label. The 90s were wild y’all. This has everything from sublime beauty to the most scotch guard huffing cut up songs. An outsider masterpiece.

I’m basically going to listen to albums for the next five days straight.

ROKIA TRAORÉ
Bowmboï
(2004)

Singer/songwriter guitarist from Mali who’s made some really incredible albums. This one might be my favorite of the bunch, but she hasn’t made a dud yet imo.

You know what is nice? Go back to the beginning of the year of your photos and just scroll through it all.I bet there are good things you forgot about, people, meals, places, things you noticed — a year holds so much.
And yeah, yeah,it holds the challenges. No shit.
Anyway…or don’t do it!
I had fun.

DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND
Jelly
(1993)

DDBB playing Jelly Roll Morton compositions. Typically prefer them playing later tunes, but this is still really good.

Did not get selected for the World Cup lottery. Honestly, fuck this tournament kind of. They've made such a mess of this ticketing process.

RL Burnside was born 99 years ago today in Lafayette County, Mississippi. There's no other blues musician whose music I've enjoyed more than his. Two of my favorite records of his: Mississippi Hill Country Blues and Too Bad Jim. There was a hypnotic quality to his playing. So damn good.

I don't know if it's haunted, but even when there is a massive talent differential in teams, Jordan-Hare Stadium is the one place I dread Alabama playing. The Swamp, Death Valley, whatever. JHS is the Voodoo Palace.
People, including Nick Saban, say Jordan-Hare Stadium is haunted

So, of course, I called experts, spent hours in the Auburn library researching past land use, bought ghost-hunting gear, used the ghost-hunting gear and tried to find out the truth

The results:

Is Jordan-Hare Stadium haunted? An AL.com investigation
Is there really a paranormal presence inside Auburn football's stadium? We tried to find out.

Treat people like cattle and charge them through the nose for it and act surprised people DGAF.
Sean Duffy: "Dressing with respect -- whether it's a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better which encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let's try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport."

Alabama is doing a concert at Bryant-Denny Stadium in the spring, which doesn't totally surprise me as it's a money making opportunity for the school. What *is* surprising to me is that I just saw that Zach Bryan is playing in Auburn *during* football season. I know that groundskeeper is piiiiiised.

I went to this tour in Hattiesburg and it was decidedly a sit down affair IMO. Thankfully there's only been one Wilco show I've been to where folks were trying to make other sit (glaring at you Knoxville!), but all the others one I've seen have been the full rock show experience with standing.
You gotta go pick up your uncle, yeah he mixed up his medicines and went crazy yelling about Uncle Tupelo songs again

HELMET
Monochrome
(2006)

Not the band's strongest effort, but there are a still a few bangers on here like "Swallowing Everything." Still has that signature Helmet thick sound, but maybe lacks that extra oomph give that it's paired down to a trio instead of being a two guitar band.

Some savvy weed grower better have a strain named Cranberry Sauce with this ad on the bottle.

I could probably quote most of this script from memory. I'm somewhat indifferent to a lot of Kevin Smith's movies, but I fucking love Mallrats:
“The Little Movie That Couldn’t”: ‘Mallrats’ Turns 30
In the fall of 1995, Kevin Smith’s second film was a box office humiliation. Now, it’s become an embarrassment of riches. We chat with Smith about the movie and how it forever altered his career.

I love the interviews our orchestra publishes with their musicians and staff. I feel like I learn so much about the making of the music I love. Here are some horn and wind players talking about the search for the perfect instrument:

I generally want the Falcons to lose the rest of their games this year to expedite the departure of our godawful coaching staff, but today is one of the only ones I wanted to win. Thank goodness for tiny miracles. Of course I couldn’t watch it though because our local affiliate has a Cowboys fetish.

KYLESA
Spiral Shadow
(2010)

How Savannah became a metal epicenter I’ll never know, but I’m glad it did. Kylesa’s two drummer attack really adds a pounding hypnotic aspect to their music. Two guitars and two lead vocalists. Bass is the only thing they haven’t doubled up on 😂

KEVN KINNEY
Broken Hearts and Auto Parts
(2002)

Drivin’ n’ Cryin’ frontman has put out a slew of excellent solo records that trend more towards the folkier end of the spectrum than the hard rock of DNC.

MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD
Tonic
(2000)

I miss this band with every fiber of my being. I don’t expect to ever see them again, but I yearn for it all the time. Anyway, this is a live acoustic album from NYC club, Tonic. Would love for them to start an archival series, even if just digitally.

We did a group parlay last summer with six people at Mondegreen. Everyone’s pick had to be approved by the rest of the group. We hit 5 of the 6 games. Damn Oakland A’s won a game somehow and busted it for us. Was the last game to finish too 😩
Holy shit. Group parlays where you and you’re friends all put in a bet together?

So many people are going to end up not friends anymore
