Can art can help keep the spirit of protests alive? In my latest article for @hyperallergic.com, I spoke with artist and academic Işıl Eğrikavuk, author of a timely book on how participatory art practices can be used to build connections and foster social dialogue in restrictive political climates.

“How can we take these collaborative, spontaneous, anonymous, witty, performative qualities expressed organically during the protests and apply them in an artistic setting to re-create this interconnectedness amid a heavily censored environment?” —artist and academic Işıl Eğrikavuk

“Authoritarianism succeeds by making dissent costly. When the authoritarian gale sends citizens running for cover, civil society organizations must anchor democratic principles.”

📣 Check it out! Explore the new data viz on our homepage: www.climatecentral.org

@climatecentral.org just released a new tool to explore climate impacts in U.S. cities and states - making complex data easier to understand for your community.

🚨 What’s the biggest Fall climate threat where you live?
Example of the new climate tool from Climate Central. This is showing climate change in Pennsylvania which is seeing annually a change in precipitation of 3.2 inches since 1970 and a warming of 3.2°F. Fall threats include heat, heavy rainfall, and sea level rise. This is associated with impacts like increased cooling demand, more extreme rainfall, and changes to fall foliage.

This gets progressively funnier with every use of the term "floppy".
One of Britain’s most senior police officers has launched an angry tirade against Extinction Rebellion protesters going “all floppy” when they get arrested.

Sir Stephen House, the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said the tactic of going limp was a “flipping nuisance” as it required extra officers to drag protesters away.

House told a London assembly police and crime committee hearing: “We have asked them to stop being floppy. And that might seem like a silly thing to say, but when we arrest them and pick them up, they go all floppy, which is why you see four or five officers carrying them away. It’s a complete waste of officers’ time, and a complete pain in the neck.”

Extinction Rebellion: how successful were the latest protests?

House also expressed annoyance at how the tactic made the police look heavy-handed. He said: “The problem with them going floppy and four offices carrying them away [is that it] looks to the general public like police are overreacting here. We’re not making them go floppy. They’re just sort of being a nuisance.”

After 20 months of field research, I recognise several officers who regularly show extremely aggressive behaviour. I'm sure they're also known within their own districts. That they keep getting sent to protests creates the impression that these violations are strategically deployed as a deterrent.

Just today, I was asked by @amnesty.de journal about the conditions of protest in Germany and whether we are seeing a new quality of police violence at protests. You can guess my answer from this video. 2yrs ago we were discussing illegal pain compliance holds, now it's punches straight to the face
