there's that now-famous internet line about how climate change means watching clips of climate disasters on people's phones until you're the one filming it, and it feels like there's some parallel about watching fascist deportation goon squad videos until it's filmed on the streets you recognize

Donald Trump’s ICE is breaking the law and violating Americans’ rights.

Oversight Dems have launched a new immigration enforcement dashboard. We will hold this Administration accountable.

This is called “chain refoulment” and it’s illegal under both U.S. and international law. And the State Department and ICE know very well what Ghana is doing and simply don’t care.
ICE deported a woman who owned a home in the US for 30 years. A judge banned ICE from deporting her to Sierra Leone where she had been tortured, so it deported her to Ghana, which kidnapped her and sent her back Sierra Leone anyway. ICE is part of this illegal conspiracy.

The BBC is now so fearful of Trump that it edited a statement of opinion about Trump out of the broadcast of a speech by a respected historian. It is a measure of how dangerously pliant much of the press has become in the face of Trump's threats.
NEWS --> BBC confirms to me that they did edit a line out of historian @rutgerbregman.com's speech. It called Trump "the most openly corrupt president in US history."

BBC also confirms this was done on the advice of lawyers. So Trump's threats worked.

Trump’s Fury at BBC Gets Unnerving Results with Pro-MAGA Edit Stunner
First, British Broadcasting Corporation execs resigned after Trump complained about a segment. Now the BBC edited out a line from a historian that was critical of Trump. Where does this end?

Seeing how much of the right-wing on Twitter is just bot farms, kinda lays bare how much hate and hatred is a project that needs to be constantly maintained, a fire that needs to be fed all the time lest it go out for a moment, so much time, effort, and resources to keep people angry and hateful.

Frustration isn't a valid reason to sabotage our future! We need to engage and educate our communities on real solutions, not just empty promises. Let's act, not just react! #blueresistance
Or if "just 114,884 working-class Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania voters [had shifted] from Trump to Harris, the Democrat would have prevailed."

Many weren't ultra-MAGA but were frustrated with the economy and thought the orange billionaire would make eggs cheaper or something 🫠
If Less Than 115,000 Votes Had Switched in Three Battleground States, Harris Would Have Beaten Trump

Alternatively, if "just 114,884 working-class Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania voters [had shifted] from Trump to Harris, the Democrat would have prevailed."

He barely won. The sad truth is some Dems stayed home, MAGA turned out, and some non-MAGAs thought a *billionaire* would lower costs.

Really appreciate this update! Thanks for your persistence. Looking forward to hearing how you'll work to change conditions for the detainees.
Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw.

The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

We're overdue for an "I'm Spartacus" moment
Every Democrat in Congress should put out a video saying troops have an obligation to refuse unlawful orders. Make them prosecute all of you. This isn't a close call.

I'd add Republicans too if I thought any of them had the courage to actually cross Trump on this.

He has revealed the worst in America, but in the process, has also awakened the best.

America will rise.

okay so the 'has too many books' and the 'needs a bit of a tidying up' are a Janus coin situation in my house and I know it's a problem but
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.

The Trump admin submitted a sworn declaration under oath that Costa Rica had changed its mind and would no longer take Mr. Abrego.

Costa Rica has now said publicly that that this is false, that they have not changed their position at all, and that they will still take him.
Unpacked:
In Aug., Govt said if Abrego pled guilty he could go to Costa Rica, where he's okay with going. Abrego said no to plea. Govt now wants to send him to Liberia. Why not Costa Rica? Govt told judge Thurs that Costa Rica wouldn’t take him anymore. @mariasacchetti exposed them.
Costa Rica will accept Abrego, per @washingtonpost.com .
If true, DOJ, DHS, and Dept of State caused lies to be disseminated to Judge Xinis all day Thursday, where an ICE official testified about info sent him by Dept of State, claiming Costa Rica wouldn't take Abrego.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

As a first gen with no $$, I started at a CC, transferred to a state, then a major land grant for my MA, and an Ivy for my PhD.

My teaching career was mostly at a major public school, where my favorite students were in their late 30s/40s.

Cheap, accessible ed creates opportunities at any age.
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.
