an intro note to pin to my profile:

Hello! I’m a political columnist & editor. I have left-wing views but I value independence and critique actors and ideas across the political spectrum — including those on my side. It's okay if you don't always agree with me; I often don't agree with myself.

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

Considering that Mamdani has so consistently spoken out against and offered policy ideas on opposing antisemitism, one must ask, what is the real reason people keep asking him?
WELKER: What is your message to Jewish New Yorkers who feel you won't be tough enough in your response to antisemitism?

MAMDANI: That I am looking forward to being the next mayor and fulfilling the commitment I've made to Jewish New Yorkers to not only protect them but to celebrate and cherish them

I get shit for saying this but it's just true (both intentionally and unintentionally), even as he continually gets dumber and darker.
once again joining the many people who have observed how much of a world-historical problem it is that Trump is so fucking funny
Q: Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?

MAMDANI: I've spoken about--

TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say yes. I don't mind.

Reporter: Are you affirming that you think the president is a fascist?

Mamdani: I've spoken about --

Trump: Just say yes, it's easier than explaining.

NEW: Federal prison workers are jumping ship & heading to ICE for better pay + bonuses. Already BOP lost >1400 people this year, reversing all of 2024’s staffing gains. It’s an unintended consequence of Trump’s push for mass deportations

As Federal Prisons Run Low on Food and Toilet Paper, Corrections Officers Leave in Droves for ICE
Many of the problems the agency is facing now are not new, but staff and prisoners fear an exodus of officers could make life behind bars even worse.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

I found a lot to disagree with in this David Leonhardt interview with Sarah Isgur, starting with the assumption in the subhed about conservatives finding "its way back to small government," particularly since Isgur worked for one of the most invasive elements of the Trump I presidency.

Can someone who actually knows anything about NY politics give me their read on this
Zohran Mamdani on Chi Ossé’s primary challenge to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries:

“I think that right now is not the time to be engaging in that kind of a primary. I think the focus should be on delivering on this affordability agenda.”

This is so wild. And my sense is that contemporary German national culture is aligned with Hurwitz's view.
I'm struck by this clip of former Obama speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz saying Holocaust education has backfired in part because people Palestinians as victims: "They think the lesson of the Holocaust is…you fight the big powerful people hurting the weak people."

I can no longer follow the plot of this show. I suspect the writers and actors can’t either. I don’t think they have a show runner.

I find it weird that the primary or only objection so many liberals and progressives online lodge against MBS is the murder of Khashoggi. Obviously a repulsive, horrifying act. But he was the architect of the brutalization of Yemen, and ofc **many** other human rights violations

Asking "is that a conflict of interest?" is a weak question. It *is* a conflict of interest. The question could be "why should the American public trust your policy decisions given your extensive conflicts of interest re: KSA?"
Q: Is it appropriate for your family to be doing business in Saudi Arabia while you're president. Is that a conflict of interest? And your royal highness, the US intel community concluded you orchestrated the brutal murder of a journali---

Q: ABC News
