"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

Tip for those in the US still waiting for a shipment notification. Check for an email from "transglobalexpress" (which might be in your spam folder). I almost marked mine as spam, but luckily I noticed the Dunmanifestin name in the email body.

Heard the latest news from the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration? We detected the collision of the most massive pair of black holes so far: #GW231123 weighing in at ~137 + ~103 times the mass of the Sun!

So to celebrate, here’s a handy chart ✨

Just how chonky are these black holes? 🤔

Ever since recorded music attained fidelity on-par with live performances, it could be argued that nobody "needs" to learn to play an instrument.

But luckily we decided the world is a better place when we teach each other how to play instruments so we still do it.

I feel the same about writing.

Another great gone. Goodbye Peter. You were a true friend. One of the first writers in comics to truly support my art. Much love to you and your family. Hope to see you on the other side.

Oh no! He was one of the first authors who I sought out regularly and super gregarious when I met him at a signing. He told stories and fielded questions from entranced fans (as he kept the line moving for those just there for the autograph), and I stood there for an hour of joy. He will be missed.

humans are not designed for the amount of feedback being a public figure on social media provides. Whether it's praise or criticism, receiving an avalanche of nonstop attention is profoundly corrosive to your brain.

This Yougov survey contains an important finding: people who rely heavily on ChatGPT rate it as being "good" at tasks that we ABSOLUTELY know for sure it is very bad at

imo, this is a strong piece of evidence these heavy users simply do not ever check outputs

I don't agree with everything Derek says here, but he definitely gets a lot right. The presentation is about 45 minutes and the other half hour is a Q & A session.
If you missed Derek Muller's @perimeterinstitute.ca public talk last night about AI and the future of education, you can watch the video here: www.youtube.com/live/PYeBGyX... It was a really great discussion of how we learn and what effect AI (and other technologies) can have on that.

I'm eagerly awaiting my copy and am not at all upset. The fact that there will be bonus pages is going to make the final product even more worth it.

I believe, deep within me, that the problem is not “people you mostly agree with yelling at you about some dumb thing” that is the problem, it is the space that you allow 15 randos on Bluesky to take up in your consciousness.

chatgpt has fully broken-through to every facet of the corporate environment. I'm spending a not-insignificant amount of my time every week now explaining to people that just because chatgpt told you that something was possible doesn't mean that it a) is or b) even exists

Mine is green (from Barnes and Noble), which is appropriate both because the author's name is Green and it arrived a few days after St. Patrick's.
