4.5 hours worth of work later and only 20 planks laid. I have most of the foredeck teak planks down. The planks along the inside gunwales are all unique cuts and sanding to fit the curve of the bow to midships section.

What you see is a motanka – a traditional Ukrainian protective doll.

Made by winding fabric, not sewing.

It has no face – to avoid giving it an identity or inviting a soul.
Instead, a sun cross marks balance and protection.

Maybe your culture has something similar?

Tonight Giljagaur, the second of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He likes to sneak into the cow shed and steal milk.

All the children put a shoe out in the window for him to put a treat or a little gift in – if they have been good that is. The bad children get a potato.

Trying to push through seasonal depression and a sinus headache. I am listening to SOMA FM Groove Salad and trying to remember what the beach smells like.

Sólheimajökull feels like a landscape caught between worlds — ice, ash, time, and silence.

The tiny group of hikers in the distance shows how immense this landscape truly is. Nature writes its story on a scale we can walk across, but never fully grasp.

Sometimes it is not enough to look at art as individual works in a museum. Sometimes it must be viewed in the context in which it is displayed amongst the other works. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, VA.

I work in a local art gallery / artist collective. Sales have been dismal. It is definitely a reflection of our troubled times. I too encourage everyone to support your local artists and small businesses. These are the folks hardest hit by a receding economy.
Hey artists and makers - if you’re seeing very few sales right now, please know that it’s not a reflection of your worth or skill. Across the board, not making back our table fees and expenses, and that’s really scary.

If you can, please shop small this season. We really need your support.
