The Federal Reserve's independence and the public's perception of that independence are critical for economic performance, including achieving the goals Congress has set for the Federal Reserve of stable prices, maximum employment, and moderate long-term interest rates.
The reported criminal inquiry into Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell is an unprecedented attempt to use prosecutorial attacks to undermine that independence. This is how monetary policy is made in emerging markets with weak institutions, with highly negative consequences for inflation and the functioning of their economies more broadly. It has no place in the United States whose greatest strength is the rule of law, which is at the foundation of our economic success.

Leaving aside the specific implications for debt restructuring, "national emergency" has become synonymous for "anything that the president views as interfering with what he wants." Not quite as the law intended.

Some thoughts on what Trump has done in Venezuela and what it might mean for US national security. Caveat: not a Latin America scholar so this is focused on US policy. Clearly huge consequences for Venezuela that others can address.

First, despite the buildup, I didn't think Trump would do it.

A sad decision from an institution I once loved; the politics of UNC have evolved in all the wrong ways.

Also, "sunset" is such doublespeak. An actual sunset is often beautiful, and it's always followed soon after by a sunrise. Here, it's just an elimination.

The G-20 has done important work on sovereign debt, access to finance and debt crisis resolution.

I visited their website to read materials from their recent summit. All the links to previous work of the G-20 are gone -- they point only here.

Sad for global governance and embarassing for the US.

Domestic politics of debt crises/restructuring:

-Blame predecessors for high debt burden (hidden debt revelations make this effective).
-Avoid IMF program & conditions.
-Hold out for an improvement in debt servicing capacity, perhaps through resource revenues or taxation.
