"Khalil’s arrest is seemingly at odds with Trump’s recent boasts that he’s “stopped all government censorship and brought back free speech in America.” But it’s perfectly consistent with his administration’s stance on pro-Palestine protests on college campuses."

I am not proud that I have spent a lot of time thinking about their place in our culture, but I have. This is brimming with insights on that topic. With a show review as a nice bonus.

Seems bad.
The current nuclear nonproliferation regime requires a US government that isn’t acting in a chaotic and unpredictable fashion. There are a number of countries that have the capacity to build a nuclear deterrent on a 3-18 months timeline who haven’t because they have relied on steady US leadership.

New, from me: Unpacking the Friday night news:
*The military purges have begun - why do they also include lawyers?
*A Judge is allowing the dismantling of USAID to proceed. This reflects a pattern where Judges are ignoring the broader democratic risks.

Originalism achieves its final argument: the Constitution is not a living document but rather a dying old man
Jack Posobiec told CPAC that Trump is not violating the Constitution because "Trump is the living embodiment of the American Constitution."

How many federal workers would DOGE need to fire to make up for Musk not paying his fair share of taxes?

Answer: 677,000. That's 44% of the entire non-DoD federal workforce.

Again, this power grab is not about the budget. It’s about politics.

This sort of gives away the "liberal deep state" nonsense.
*There has never been a Director of the FBI who was a Democrat.
*The Republican Directors were not targeting conservatives, if the word "conservative" has any meaning.

People see Musk fighting with angry libs with obscure ideals, $ that ends in "illions" going to far away lands, and musing about sending 5k checks. It sounds good.

Better speeches from D Senators ain't gunna cut through the noise.

Good news: we don't need D's for an anti-king attention war

This is pretty straightforward authoritarianism: if you don't support my toxic businesses, I will use my government power to kneecap yours.
Extraordinary story the Wall Street Journal.

X is threatening advertisers that if they don’t spend more, Elon Musk will use his influence in government to block company mergers.

That’s extortion.

Damn it. I'm probably going to get dementia too.
Awful: Numerous scientists and researchers were just fired at NIH's center for treating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They fear Trump-Musk cuts could dramatically set back our ability to treat dementias.

New reporting from me here:

Oops: Trump-Musk Cuts Just Wrecked an NIH Org Championed by GOPers
Republicans once lavished praise on an NIH center that deals with Alzheimer’s. Donald Trump and Elon Musk are hobbling it. What will those Republicans say now?

the line about how trump is just trolling or joking about the “king” thing is belied somewhat by the fact that his administration’s explicit position is he can do whatever he wants and that everyone in every branch of government needs to bow to his demands or be banished

If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

Every Democrat should be saying this every day. Several times each day.
@chrismurphyct.bsky.social: "The question is can you work with Republicans in the middle of a constitutional crisis when democracy is on the line? And right now, I think that this crisis is serious and deepening in its seriousness, that our job #1, #2, and #3 is to save our democracy."

Fact check: nearly 70 percent of US money for Ukraine actually went to US defense industry to replenish the stocks of OLD stuff that went to Ukraine to use.

Much of which we would have paid to destroy as their lifespan expired.

New, from me: DOGE's mass firings of probationary employees are a masterclass in how not to manage public organizations.
