i understand why the modern tech press sucks so bad because i got started in that field around 2009-10. It was like freebasing techno-optimism. Every month new tools were announced and every year they got better at doing stuff you actually wanted them doing.

People got addicted to that high.
Nostalgia is a toxic impulse but also I miss the time when tech trends were things like "let's put everything in a translucent colored plastic case" instead of "let's add software to everything that lies and also accelerates climate change"

If you want a weird but true fact to talk about:

Dexter Holland, lead singer of The Offspring, was instrumental in this. His doctorial thesis in molecular biology was sequencing mRNA in HIV. The paper was also heavily cited in creating the COVID-19 vaccine.
It feels like we should be making a bigger deal of “we actually did in fact find a cure for AIDS”
