Fascists build power, in liberal democracies like the US, by pointing to the very real failures of capitalism, and blaming them on the least powerful people in society, to redirect attention away from the Henry Fords and Elon Musks who are actually causing the problems.

This is not a new pattern 1/

Both judges and juries bring biases to the courtroom. The critical difference is that juries are more diverse than a single judge. Today, 89% of judges are white, 61% are men, and around a third attended private school. Fewer than 10% come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. UK justice

the birthright clause was not just written to wipe dred scott off of the books, it was written to repudiate the *idea* behind dred scott, you might say the larger *ideological project* of dred scott. and the whole of section 1 of the 14th amendment is a constitutional statement of political equality

dred scott, in their minds, established the united states as a place of tiered citizenship and permanent inequality among americans. it was a ruling that said, in effect, that all men *were not* created equal and would *never* be treated as such.

i think to understand the meaning of the birthright citizenship clause to the framers of the 14th amendment, you have to understand significance of dred scott to the civil war republican party. dred scott wasn't just a bad ruling, it was understood as a rejection of the declaration itself.

“Our kids will fix this!”

Fuck off.

Our kids will be living in a derailed society where fixing anything will be next to impossible.

They will curse us for squandering THIS final, fleeting moment.

They apparently view wealth, greed, and a desire to use political power for personal gain as evidence of merit.
I've seen some lawmakers argue that anything that limits their ability to make outside money would discourage the best of the best" from running for public office. I'll see if I can find a clip.

They like to talk about fairness and at ff, but the reality is that seeking and gaining political power SHOULD come with restrictions that other people don't have to deal with.

With power comes responsibility, etc., and unrestrained power is one of the most destructive things around.
Has anyone written a coherent, good-faith argument *against* a ban on stock trading by members of Congress, or in favor of the status quo? What is the argument lawmakers use when explaining why they don't want a vote on the matter? Having trouble finding.
