Poe lifted the chair again. “Hopefully this won’t take too long.” Then he smashed the chair against the drawer again, and again. Half a dozen good hits had the slider bent and misshapen along one edge, but was also loosening the spot welds that attached it to the drawer. He wiggled it, checking which welds still held and where he should hit the slider next. “So did the drawer offend your honor, or is this some kind of anger management technique I’m not familiar with?” Annie asked. Poe exhaled a chuckle. “It is pretty cathartic,” he admitted. “But I need this strip of metal.” He wiggled the slider again, then gave it two more good bangs with the chair until it popped free, skidding several inches along the cement floor before Annie stopped it with a shoe.

Your experience on that sailboat gives you infinite more experience on the job than anyone else, to say the least!” Jenny seemed excited by the idea, which worried Sam a bit. “Glumwyrm?” Sam asked, looking down. He was about to ask what this was when the woman, who had long, wavy red hair flowing down her back and shoulders stepped up and started talking. Her clothing made Sam think a lot about ‘pirate’ clothing for some reason. “Glumwyrm harvesting? Are you serious? Edgar, are you really gonna get a newbie thrown into that life right as he falls into our little world, just like that?” “Now now, Captain Sinmara, this isn’t about you! You know the Harvesters need new people to fill the ranks every so often-“ Edgar said until the captain interrupted again. “Oh yes I do! And that’s because those damn wyrms eat a dozen or so harvesters every season!” “Wait, what?” Sam asked, suddenly spooked. “Well fuck,” Jenny said, clearly disappointed. “It’s not that extreme and you know it, captain!” Edgar protested.

She was fifteen years older and heavier than the Kelly he'd known, and she had no way to tell whether he'd done the up-and-down appraisal of an old lover noticing *changes.*
