[Guide to interacting with potentially Palestinian fundraising dms as someone in Europe]

I'm sharing this because I've received quite a few of these over past couple of days, possibly because of who I've publicly interacted with or maybe the hashtags, and I've had to very quickly develop a […]

@JessTheUnstill the next morning and we picked up all the broken glass together before any children turned up. And I never got in trouble for the drinking. And that's how it should be
afewbugs.social.coop.ap.brid.gy
@JessTheUnstill one of the best things my parents ever did for me was when I was an underage drinker, we were drinking in a children's playground and someone dropped a bottle and smashed it. And I said we should pick up the pieces in case a child cut themselves, and my "friends" started laughing […]

Parents, an important thing my to communicate clearly and explicitly to your kids:

Any time for any reason, if they need out of something, they can blame you, call you for a ride, whatever, and you'll deal with whatever fallout might come of it. Teacher being a bully? Principal yelling at you? […]

I have hilariously screwed up my day by getting a time conversion wrong. But hey, check out these cool pinhole rising-sun images projected on the wall this morning by the natural pinholes created by trees outside! You can actually see the half-circle shape of […]

A bunch of orange half circles (flat on top, circle on the bottom), on a light blue wall Same as the previous picture, but with a slightly different configuration of half circles (because the trees outside were blowing in the wind, it was changing quickly)

If you’re a pound shop politician desperately angling for populist clout by claiming you’ve seen no white faces in some place you visited then I have some advice: If that’s truly what you’ve observed then it’s not evidence that BME migrants don’t “integrate”. It’s evidence that the whites won’t […]

@pete unfortunately it's a beauty thing that started in South Korea putting snail extract in skincare stuff so yeah it's real snail 😢
afewbugs.social.coop.ap.brid.gy
The weird and honestly slightly upsetting thing about having pet #GiantAfricanLandSnails is you get a reputation at work as "the person who likes snails" and then people give you things like soap or facemasks made out of snails? Like people wouldn't do that with any other pet, you know?

One of the early challenges I experienced when unionizing is that people don't want to talk to those who sit close to them, they want to talk to people who are ideologically aligned.

That includes me, it's something I had to get over.

What I found, and many others found, was that ideological […]

Your annual reminder that modern physics is done in diverse teams of anything between 1 and 1000 people, by people of all backgrounds imaginable.

Breakthroughs are not made single-handedly by at most 3 white men. Arguably they never were.

I wish that when someone who had been struggling with depression for a long time dies, we would say "She died from depression" similar to how we say "He died from cancer" or "They died from AIDS".

Sure, the depression itself didn't stop the heart beating, but it was the reason that […]

By purchasing these treats we have now accidentally trained the cats to go feral and try to climb us every time we make gravy.

(Also Tesco's Free From beef gravy granules are vegan, as if the world wasn't weird enough already)
Two cylindrical tubs with plastic lids that pop off with a similar sound, one containing Katkin dehydrated salmon cat treats and one containing gravy granules

Can anyone recommend a very basic, non-data harvesting Android app that would allow me to track time worked on different projects? I don't need any billing or anything, just pick a project, start the clock when I start working, stop the clock when i finish. Happy to pay if reasonable. TIA

I’m a scientist who studies how climate change impacts our lives and the places we love.

Most of us are worried, but many feel stuck on what to do. If that's the way you feel, check out this list below!

We can’t fix it alone, but I know we can together. 💚
A list of the most effective ways an individual can catalyze change at the scale we need to effectively tackle climate change, based on social science.

Two of the most common climate misconceptions I see, even among knowledgeable folks, are that (1) most people aren't worried about climate change, and (2) if they were, they'd act.

Not true! Data show (1) most people are worried, but (2) they won’t act if they don’t know what to do-and most don’t.
A map of the world showing how levels of worry in most countries are greater than 70%. Source: Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, International Public Opinion on Climate Change, 2023.

For every €1 provided through a Basic Income For Artists pilot program in Ireland, the government got €1.46 back. So it’s being made permanent.

Over and over we see it. It saves public money to provide public housing. And it makes public money to provide basic income.

We can’t afford to NOT do it.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."
