I kinda miss getting kicked in the face by toddlers. Now they're just gigantic, but still hungry and grumpy all of the time.

(I just realised that I've written "Katharine" (Jenkins) so many times of late that I've misspelled 'Katherine' - that's not good)

I can’t believe I have to say this, but historically, masked men who kidnap families in the middle of the night are usually not the good guys.

I've heard great news! LavLang is going to happen (the current climate meant there had to be some adjustments) and in a wonderful place: Edinburgh! Fabulous keynotes too! See you in Scotland in September 2026!

Corot produced this work of Notre-Dame church at Mantes (c1860) when he was particularly interested in the study of architecture. He made many paintings and drawings of churches during this period, although most are of much grander buildings such as Chartres Cathedral.

'Berlin at Night.' (c1860) Described by Degas as the ‘greatest living master’ during his lifetime, Adolph von Menzel is less remembered today outside of Germany than the French painter who admired him; his career deserves far greater appreciation and study than it receives.

Not quite on the same scale, but very personally pleasing, I got the email saying my paper on Katharine's work had got an R&R for the special issue in her memory while I was in St Andrews, having just presented a version of the same material at her memorial symposium.

I didn't think its use as an example of a transformative experience rested on thinking it has *positive* value that can't be grasped - I thought it was more generally that you couldn't know what it's like even if you had a lot of descriptive info and so it resists rational decision-making.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

As for this - in other words the government would rather we offshore our operations instead of generating jobs and exports in a high productivity sector in the UK. I despair...

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

An Ursula Le Guin Themed Creative Writing Workshop, 11th October, 4 pm, online. In this workshop, led by science fiction writer, poet, and philosophy lecturer Dr Rachel Handley, you will be invited to explore Le Guin's short stories and related themes. There will be opportunities to respond to writing prompts based on Le Guin's and other's work throughout the workshop.
