Back in the 1960s there emerged a grassroots, far right insurgency inside the OR GOP (and the GOP nationally) that sought to move the party rightward. Oregon's leading Republican, Mark Hatfield, frequently warned of the danger the far right posed to American democracy. bsky.app/profile/seth...

These words were written by Oregon GOP Senator Mark Hatfield in 1968, in the Forward to this book about Billy James Hargis.

Our neighbors are still being terrorized and disappeared by fascist secret police both here in Minneapolis and nationwide. There has been no victory here the fight is just beginning, and we are already being told that it has been won by people who have done nothing but funded ice at every turn.
