It's October, so it's time for folks to break out the #spooky games & #horror #ttrpgs. If you haven't yet, give The Last Hand a shot for a poker-driven take on the Play-To-Lose horror experience. You have to cooperate to play, but only the winning hand survives:

Folks with #podcasts, how did you start getting guests before you had a show that they could see was worth their time?
airborneham.bsky.social
This is really important and not thought about enough. Even games that say "everyone is a player" still use terms like "NPC" and "the GM has the final say" and such which are fine short-hands because we all know that already, but does convey an implicit authority that influences play at the table.
levikornelsen.bsky.social
"The GM is a neutral referee and not a player" is a holdover from wargaming, and still visible in language like "NPC" - not a player character.

And, look, I think there's value in that paradigm, but I also think many games have inherited the rhetorical clutter, not the value.

You can just make character sheets for games that don’t exist. It’s free and no-one stops you
Fake character sheet for a fake game called MOUSTACHE BOYFRIEND

I'm glad I finally got to play @felixisaacs.bsky.social's Wildsea to unlock the FitD design space I needed to keep working on Odd Army. Lots of great ideas in that book.

Deciding to move my fulfillment/e-commerce to Plus One/Brandfox after the Bloodfields campaign saw me not getting any $ from sales for 9 months, lost ~500 zines, & took months to get my things out of a warehouse to my current, far better partner. Plus, I even lost 25% of sales for the great service!

Long read: For around one year, indie publisher Plus One Exp operated as a business unit within a shipping and warehousing company called Brandfox. They worked with Possum Creek Games, Stockholm Kartell, among others. It was disastrous for almost everyone involved.

This is the article that finally got me to be a subscriber. I love the work Rascal does and the kind of investigative journalism in our small industry. I've been meaning to sign up for a while and this was a good reason to give them money today.

Award nominations are cool.

But you know what's even cooler?

Leaving 5 star ratings for games on itch.

Playing another game of Oath by @leder.games. Lost my seat as Chancellor last game and now my lil eyeball guy has to try and take back the scepter. Or, my real plan, get exiled and revolt against my own empire.

Andor (2022)

I was going to quote “oppression is the mark of fear” but this one's not bad either.
So much going wrong, so much to say, and all of it happening so quickly. The pace of oppression outstrips our ability to understand it. And that is the real trick of the Imperial thought machine. It's easier to hide behind 40 atrocities than a single incident.

Sci-fi and fantasy settings are always like "The defining trait of humans is their adaptability and perseverance" but I'm beginning to think the defining trait of humans is superstition and willingness to believe in conspiracy theories.

chatgpt has fully broken-through to every facet of the corporate environment. I'm spending a not-insignificant amount of my time every week now explaining to people that just because chatgpt told you that something was possible doesn't mean that it a) is or b) even exists

This is the story of Jasmine Mooney, a Canadian entrepreneur who was detained at the San Diego border while attempting to renew a US work visa. She spoke fluent English, had a Canadian passport, lawyers, and media attention. And was still in jail for two weeks.

Good games are ultimately going to be a better viewing experience for an audience at home, especially when designed with the purpose of entertaining that audience. A poorly designed game will always be worse to watch because viewers can tell when a game is bad and players aren't having fun.

Sam, @paulrobalino.bsky.social, & the team at GC are great at using games to craft a story and engaging with players in a way that compels interesting decisions and, obv the main goal, funny moments. They are students of the medium of game shows and reality TV and put effort into making good games.
airborneham.bsky.social
On Beast Games, it's all spectacle with no thought put into the actual games and how they will come across to an audience, too many players to have any attachments to their journey, and Mr. Jimmy Beast seems to be uninterested in crafting a compelling story for the audience.
