We're delighted to share the programme for this term's History of Childhood seminar series. We can't wait to hear from all our fantastic speakers. Join us for our first session on Monday 20 October, at Magdalen College Oxford or online via Teams at 11am when we'll be thinking all about 'play'!
Programme for the History of Childhood seminar series Michaelmas 2025. Seminars are on Mondays 11:00-12:15 at Magdalen College Oxford (Sophia Sheppard Room) and online via Microsoft Teams. All welcome and to join us for lunch afterwards.
On Monday 20 October there is a welcome seminar and discussion of approaches to ‘play’ within histories of childhood and youth. Meet with other researchers working on histories of childhood and youth, with papers exploring ‘play’ from: Fiona Maxwell (University of Chicago) on drama and performativity; Holly Nielsen (historian and narrative designer) on board games; and Caitlin Hendrie (Macquarie University) on archaeological approaches. On Monday 3 November Joey Rauschenberger will speak on ‘Children on the streets. Conceptual thoughts on a history of modernity and empirical explorations on the example of the late German Empire.’ On Monday 17 November, Charlotte Canizo will give a paper on ‘Crossing Borders, Reshaping Lives: Jewish Orphan Migrations and Humanitarian Relief Before the Holocaust (late nineteenth - early twentieth century)’. Our final seminar is on Monday 1 December when Aisha Djelid will present on 'Enslaved Children, “Adultification,” and Resistance in the antebellum US South, 1812-1861'.

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship – call for Expressions of Interest open

The School is now inviting expressions of interest for candidates interested in the BA Postdoctoral Fellowship. Please consider directing any outstanding early career scholars in your network who are eligible to apply (see below) to our Postdoctoral Opportunities page.

The deadline for EoIs is 4th August 2025.

Next Wednesday July 16th at 1pm the School is running an online information session for applicants. Prospective applicants should email history-research@qmul.ac.uk to request the link.

Eligibility criteria
Applicants must be within three years of their successful viva voce examination. For this round of competition, applicants are expected to have completed their viva voce between 1 April 2023 and 1 April 2026. Exemption from this criterion may be granted for reasons occurring after the date of the viva voce examination such as: maternity leave, illness, family commitments etc but this must be confirmed with the BA prior to application.
Applicants must be a British citizen or EEA national OR have completed a doctorate at a UK university. Any applicant who does not fall into one of these categories must demonstrate a strong prior association with the UK academic community, for example through a previous period of non-permanent employment (for a minimum of 12 months) at a UK university.
Applicants must not have held a permanent academic post in an institution of higher education at any time in their career (exemption may be granted if a permanent role is below 0.5FTE).

Unlike the Leverhulme scheme, candidates cannot ordinarily resubmit (unless invited to do so by the BA) unless they reach second stage – so unless they have an exceedingly strong publication profile, candidates who are very recent graduates will not usually be competitive. They are welcome to submit an EoI, but they may well be encouraged to wait a year before applying.
