It is not colleges or schools that are ruining your relationships with your children.

It's YOU.

We grew up in your racist, abusive, monstrous homes & made better decisions for ourselves.

It wasn't teachers, or indoctrination.

It was strangers being kind to me when nobody in my family was.

Very useful thread!
It’s that time of year: what was the piece of writing about AI that stuck with you the most this year, pop press or academic? A few of mine in the thread. ⬇️

OMG. This is my soapbox! I didn't write this but I feel all of this deep in my soul. Thank you for sharing.

You missed the entire point because you don’t want to call the thing a thing.

Biden was the most progressive POTUS since LBJ. Harris was going to follow his lead.

From walking picket lines to increasing wages, to opportunities for homes and education…the majority of y’all rejected that in 2024.
Miss Aja, I’ve been voting for the democratic nominee since the early 90s, including Hilary and Kamala, and here we are. Point is, just voting democrat is not the answer. Voting for democrats with economic policies for the majority of Americans is the way forward.

There are so many trends, especially in tech, that I was told I'd effectively be forced to adopt and then never did.

My things worked fine before, if I don't want to use something I can just keep not using it. It's not incumbent on me to change, it's incumbent on tech to prove it's worth using.

It doesnt matter if it stays here for 5 years, 10, 100 years. I will still hate it and continue to be against it because its SHIT.

I think we've all had quite enough of no imagination tech bro billionaires who don't know what it is to be happy saying, "you don't know what you like until we tell you what you like" then offering us cars that burst into flames, space trash, & an environment killing robot that encourages psychosis

When a customer says to a normal business "I don't want this," that business has to either change course or die. When a customer says to Meta "I don't want this," Meta says "oh you just wait, we'll figure out some way to convince you that you indeed DO want this, plus, where else can you go?"

The billionaires who own much of the the infrastructure of our 21st century lives have progressively enshittified that infrastructure while expanding their wealth, and then they scold us for being small-souled peasants who don’t believe in progress anymore.
it is amazing how so much tech gets unremittingly worse year on year at whatever you once used it for and less pleasant to use and more bound up with creepy politics as well as personal and environmental harms and yet also still less productive of actual goods and these are somehow great visionaries

No one needs AI. No one ever needs fucking AI. Especially disabled people. Stop fucking using disabled people as a justification for something that has only existed

AI is death.

Death of thought.
Death of creativity.
Death of truth.
Death of trust.
Death of the environment.

And sometimes, literal human death.

Here, one academic describes how it's killing universities (institutions which are simultaneously under attack from the fascists).
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Red teaming tech harms is a myth. Guardrails are a myth. Algorithmic audits are a myth. Multi-stakeholder collaboration is a myth. These ideas serve to honeypot regulators and civil society into thinking they can work with tech companies to make them safe on their own terms, but it doesn’t work.

I walked away from my last job profoundly jaded that the voluntary commitments by tech companies to address violent extemism on their platforms and to collectively hold the industry to account together were at best cynically held, and every day since has hit a new low.

And I don't know if the answer is: everyone is too traumatized to do work and we need to reinvent society. Or if it's more like: generations are losing their cognitive abilities and willpower due to destructive technologies. Or: we all have post-viral brain damage. Or: all of the above.

It's also a positive feedback mechanism. The more AI generated material will exist online, the more of AI will be based on material it generated itself. It will result in a dilution of quality. Inbreeding of knowledge.

No. The chief problem is, AI is literally A TOOL FOR UNLEARNING. The more you use it, the worse you get at whatever it is you’re using it for. It’s the opposite of educating, it’s uneducating. 2/2
