Very cool field course on forest restoration (focus on deadwood+soils) last week. Organized by #Priodiversity project in Evo (also a CS area in @safenet-eu.bsky.social).
Great to visit the Evo restoration experiment and Kotinen old-growth. My highlight: reactivating my soil knowledge (yay podzols)
Old-growth forest, dominated by mature spruce trees. A lot of downed deadwood and many young trees in the foreground. A podzol soil profile with a very clear grey eluvial horizon A group of people wearing orange safety vests, standing in a birch forest and discussing

How expensive are 🪲💨🔥?! I can‘t believe it, but my 2nd PhD paper is finally published @natclimate.nature.com! Disturbances lower the economic value of Europes 🌲 by 29%... Climate change will increase it to up to 42%! (Now imagine a company looses 42% of its value…) doi.org/10.1038/s41558-025-02408-9

🖥️🧬 #Sciencejob Alert! Good knowledge of plant ecology and experience in coding? Our Research Group Dynamic Macroecology offers a position for six-months: apply.refline.ch/273855/1746/... #AIModels #Biome #PlantEcology #Macroecology
Job: The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.

The research group Dynamic Macroecology of Prof. Dr. Niklaus E. Zimmermann studies questions related to spatial ecology, macroecology, macroevolution and biodiversity conservation. Within the Advanced Grant SNFS Project "Biome.cc”, we seek to fill by August 1st, 2025 (or later), for a duration of 6 months, a
Tempory Employee in Macroecology and AI 80-100% (f/m/d)
Within the Advanced Grant project “Biome.cc”, we develop a series of AI models trained to detect plant traits from photographs. This supports our goal to characterize global biomes by means of plant traits and to map these biomes globally. This position will develop suitable sets of pictures from online sources such as gbif.org to train and test these AI-models. Further, you will support WSL scientists in training such AI models and to test them. In addition, you will support WSL scientists in downloading large quantities of images with the goal of applying the trained and tested models and to extract plant trait information from them. At WSL, you will work in close collaboration with Prof Zimmermann’s group on global biomes. Your main place of work will be the Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL in Birmensdorf.
You hold an MSc degree and you have a good knowledge of plant ecology. In addition, you have good experience in coding, preferably in python and/or R. Experience with the processing of large datasets is an asset. The capability to develop new ideas independently is necessary, as are very good English skills (both written and oral). You are a curious, self-reliant person who is also an excellent team worker valuing cooperation.

And importantly, big thank you to the colleagues from Transilvania University of Brașov who showed me their beautiful forests and interesting research sites. Most of them are not on BlueSky but @mihaidanielnita.bsky.social is and he deserves extra mention for taking some of the pictures I used here.

Finally, if you work with forest data, models etc. but do not have a field component in your work, I encourage you to take any possible opportunity to get out in the forest with field-savvy people. Seeing forest dynamics with reality is essential to understanding what data and models tell you.

And a question at the heart of @safenet-eu.bsky.social - how will all of this, together with human actions in surrounding managed areas affect forest-dwelling species and what could we do to support biodiversity in these forests?
Mushrooms growing on a downed log. A spruce seedling growing atop a polypore on a big downed log. A three-toed woodpecker on a tree stem.
albrichk.bsky.social
Spruce bark beetle is present and benefiting from climate change, but there are also other complex factors (e.g. winter droughts) at work here, affecting all tree species, even the majestic old firs. Quite excited to see how these dynamics play out in the #iLand model, once we have it set up.

A rare field day, getting to know the forests of our @safenet-eu.bsky.social case study area in Romania, near Brasov. Impactful to see the shifts in species dominance already happening. Spruce and, crucially, Silver Fir are not doing well, Beech is gaining importance even at higher elevations.
