Yesterday Jenrick attacked the judiciary. Badenoch wants to leave the ECHR and today she attacks Academia.

Not unconnected incidents, key parts of the Orban playbook and Project 2025, the right-wing strategy for undermining and hollowing out democracy.

Morning: to any fans of ONS shenanigans, a new “Notice” informs us that an error in VAT data from HMRC means public sector net borrowing is £2bn lower so far this fiscal year than previously thought. This will not have gone down at all badly in HMT. www.ons.gov.uk/economy/gove...

I wouldn't be so complacent. The undermining of judicial system was easy in the USA because it was already politicised. But it was a key part of Orban's strategy to hollow out democracy in Hungary. It could happen here, there are already plans being prepared www.bearlypolitics.co.uk/p/project-20...

I know the disaster in Gaza is very important and consumes the time and actions of lots of people.

But IMO this threat to our own democratic structures is just as, or more, urgent for us to address as a country and nation.

It's two part. Pls read both.

Polish PM Donald Tusk is 💯 correct. North Stream 2 was a grave geopolitical mistake, as Poland and the Baltic states warned for decades.

Europe must never again be dependent on Russian gas, and must hasten the transition away from fossil fuels that fund autocracy and destroy our environment.
X post by Polish PM Donald Tusk saying "The problem with North Stream 2 is not that it was blown up. The problem is that it was built."

Why don’t you know what Labour are doing/already achieved?

🌹 Labour’s getting it done.

17 Manifesto pledges delivered,
18 on track,
19 in progress.

That’s real change in just 15 months.

Remember, it was the Washington Post who gave Bondi a thumbs up to be confirmed. Democracy Docket made clear from day one that she was an election denying sycophant.

No surprise at their coverage of today. Support independent, pro-democracy media today. hubs.ly/Q03M8rql0

It would be worth comparing similar photos from past National Guard operations.

I would bet a similar team from the '60s/'70s would have been half the weight and twice as physically fit.

Did someone tell him we've been deregulating for 40 years and that's the cause of most of our current problems?

Few people saying "actually she's right" about media obsession w Farage, but 1) it would OBVIOUSLY come up in interviews; 2) there are better answers than "SorryWhatPardon I don't understand"; and 3) it actually wasn't true here - first half was about her poor performance with no mention of RefUK.

Among the worse interviews I've seen a politician give. There is no way Badenoch can (or should) survive until May.

- Do you admire Nigel Farage?
- On what basis?
- Do you admire him?
- I don't understand your question.
- What do you think of him?
- Why don't you ask me about Ed Davey?" 😱 ~AA

Excellent letter from the Bishop of Birmingham to Robert Jenrick.

At a time when so many other voices have been silent, the bishops have been admirably outspoken against attempts to stir up division.

The churches do a lot of community cohesion work & do not want to see this trashed for party gain.

In Russia if you fall out of favour you die from "window cancer".

In the USA they shoot you, your spouse and your dog and/or burn down your house.

From Peter Kellner's latest substack:

Of 560 Labour voters present and recent past (switched since '24), *not one* said any of the following when asked about gov's best achievements

Some obv will be conscious of these things, but Labour still has a big problem, he writes: "voters aren’t hearing"

"The censorship isn't the government, isn't the authorities, it's in us. It's when we sit there and say 'Oh they won't like that. You can't do that, you can't say that.'"

RTD in blistering form here, and absolutely bloody right.
