What Was is part of how we got here. Harm and violence (including authoritarianism) do not happen in a vacuum. They occur because of conditions that create, allow for, and perpetuate them. We must not restore or reinforce the harmful and dangerous conditions that led us to this point.
It’s imperative that we understand that longing for the return to what was already an atrocity is not freeing us. We can fight for the world we want instead of begging for the previous (also) oppressive arrangement.

governments should spend money, literally all their fucking money. on taking care of the people from whom they got the money. on building cool shit for the people from whom they got the money to use, like highways and public works. this is real easy

We should reject outright the framing that the answer is to cut spending, that it needs to be cut. Even giving in to that is playing into conservatives’ hands, letting them set the edges of the debate.

My god. The Mayor of Johnston, RI just announced he's using eminent domain to seize 31 acres of land that was supposed to become affordable housing, and to build a "new public safety complex" –– sounds a lot like a cop city!
