Hello! It’s time to update my introduction post (at least, in my mind).

I’m Alison. I’m a writer, artist, reader, and now a knitter. I’m also the cataloguing and metadata librarian at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

This is my cat, Mallow. She’s the best cat.

I greeted the associate dean of the library by saying “oh look, our associate dean has graced us with his presence” but at least as revenge for my smart-ass ways, he got to tell me he dumped gift books on my desk.

Me, a person who spends a lot of my professional time thinking about Words and How We Describe Things reading an email about how the university librarian is now titled Dean, University Library and Archives: "hmmm yes very interesting, fascinating use of language and power here, very good"

"This website is free" No. This website comes at a terrible cost

I’m not enjoying this everything but rain. Rain, dammit.

My partner and I are both from NB! And my sibling! And my partner’s sister, parents, cousins, aunt and uncle. All live in HRM!

One of the greatest population subgroups in HRM is people from NB (I made this up but I feel like it’s true).

I have blocked so many Temu ads and accounts and they keep spawning new ones to advertise.

How is this repeatedly made into a policy issue - by *all* parties - when the blunt fact of the matter is that grown adults who are obliged to pay for their own education, and relentlessly pursued to repay their loans, should be able to study whatever the fuck they want.

Anyway, the provost said it so I expect to be able to pick "library" from a list next time there's a survey that asks me to pick my faculty.

(Don't worry, I'll be sending a sharply worded email to someone, I'm sure.)

A university is not a marketplace of ideas. The study of reality is not obligated to produce a product that pleases you.

The kids who stole a package off our porch last week brought it back after opening it because it was just my spouse’s shampoo and conditioner.

will just repeat that if you straight up replaced the current Canada Council grants system with this it would fund about 1000 more artists per year for the same amount of money and immeasurably greater stability

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

The solution to both the lack of a stable social media site for me to post my little sentences and the financial difficulties of the Canadian post office is for the Canadian post office to create a social media site where I can post my little sentences.

Yup. I was given the option to get one but it was very clearly something they did not want to give me based on the extra hoops!!!

When I throw my phone into the harbour, it's over.

Correct and it grinds my gears every day.

I have nothing but Microsoft Authenticator on there. I never use my phone for any other work things.

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

It’s @brett-o-d.bsky.social’s birthday today. He’s my favourite person and has been for almost seventeen years, which is half of his (our) lives. If you see him today, tell him happy birthday!
A picture of a man at a dinner table. The man is white, with curly brown hair and a brown beard. He’s wearing a black button up shirt. In front of him are three plates: one with fried haddock, one with spaghetti, and one with ham and green beans. A cocktail is to the right, partially drank and garnished with a lime.

Endcaps full of eggnog are back!

I didn’t get any, mostly because I need the vegan stuff and also because every time I drink eggnog I’m just trying to have my grandmother’s eggnog. She died in 2020, and I don’t have the recipe. You’re welcome for making this sad.
