of all the things the administration is doing, i am a little mystified by this effort to completely destroy the science, technology and medical research sector in the united states
Exclusive: Weeks after President Donald Trump’s administration ordered NIH to pull $250 million in biomedical research grants to Columbia University, the agency is freezing all remaining grant money owed to the university until further notice. scim.ag/4if5Rg1
NIH freezes all research grants to Columbia University
Amid negotiations with Trump, the university could risk losing nearly $700 million

Yeah I’ve been saying this for weeks: we are disrupting at least one, more likely two generations of scientists in the pipeline. It’s gonna suck the most for, say, people with cancer and ALS and neurodegenerative diseases and dementia. Among others.
Right. Getting an MD/PhD is an 8-10 year endeavor.

You can’t just fire a bunch of people at NIH and at universities and expect others to come in to keep up the science, or do other good science.

Ramming in inexperienced people with a political agenda leads to shitty science.
A decade at least. My nephew is an MD/PhD and that’s a 10 year endeavor. So if you give up on this year’s admitting class, as his program at UMASS Medical just did, you lose that talent for a decade. Hope they admit next year so this isn’t true.

At least 12 universities now have hiring freezes and nearly 30 have cut PhD admissions this year

If you hear of other places you can add them to this google doc:
I created a brief spreadsheet of reductions I've heard of so far. Any additions you know of (especially if you have the links/receipts) would be great: docs.google.com/spreadsheets...

for pity’s sake, I am BEGGING university leaders to stop framing this issue in terms of what this will cost the university. people dont care!

EXPLAIN WHAT THIS WILL COST THE PUBLIC: closed hospitals and clinics, skipped treatments, loss of access to experimental drugs, unemployment, recession

in what meaningful way can we say that the constitution is in effect when an unelected and unaccountable billionaire is wielding state power to unilaterally cancel congressional appropriations?
Hearing that DOGE went into the Dept of Education today and shut down almost the entirety of the department's in-house research arm, Institute of Educational Sciences, cancelling contracts totally about $900m.

Under fascism, no one is safe.

Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc.

Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations.

Silence won’t protect institutions. It won’t protect people; it never does.

In case folks are interested in contacting their congresspeople about the NIH indirect cuts with some estimates of what they would mean for institutions in their state, here are some estimates based on published F&A rates and funding ... let me know if you want a particular state

Here is a script you can use for any issue. Find your reps' # at reps.fyi or 5calls.org. Every time you see a news story that horrifies you: call, or something else about it. It matters to say what you believe. You are setting a norm.

Odds are good that someone in your life has received vital care at a university-affiliated hospital near you.

Trump and Musk want to destroy them. Call your reps and demand they push back -- especially if they're Republicans.
