“Sleep privilege” is the reality that not everyone has equal access to restorative sleep. Parents of kids with special needs (our focus), shift workers, caregivers, and others face real barriers. Could our well-meaning messaging around sleep be adding to their stress? #sleep #circadian #parenting

"Navigating academia as a young mother is hard, but it's also rewarding."

In this #ScienceWorkingLife, a #PhD student wrote that her daughters have benefited from her pursuit of higher education. #NationalHigherEducationDay scim.ag/3FEjXKu
Illustration of a scientist doing work while her two daughters pop out of her coat. Headline says: How I let go of my guilt as a mother in grad school.

Researchers did not mince words about this purge of senior NIH leadership:
“This will go down as one of the darkest days in modern scientific history in my 50 years in the business,” says @mtosterholm.bsky.social.

These cuts come on Jay Bhattacharya's first day as NIH director.

In shock move, four institute directors at the US biomedical agency are removed from their posts.

This is correct. NIH can’t award grants if the institutes are dismantled.

Musk and Trump get their hands off NIH or they will kill the cancer cures and economic advantages created by the US’s world-leading science enterprise.

To state the obvious, I think what we are seeing today is the actual dismantling of the NIH. At the very least, this will render certain ICs completely non-functional, which obviously is the point.

Buy, hey, study sections and council meetings are back on 🙄

I am the product of an IEP then a 504 plan doing what it's supposed to do. Many more of us are than you know. Forcing the Ed Department into shambles will hurt disabled kids, as there will be less federal oversight into how schools are behaving.

My piece on NIH’s politicization, is encapsulated in the experience these scientists had, including deeply ideological language explaining their grant termination. The scientific rigor of the current review process I described is a stark contrast to this donmoynihan.substack.com/p/politicizi...

Our research showed that long-term care home & retirement home leaders were not sure how best to support staff well-being and mental health, particularly amidst other pandemic pressures.

In response, we developed the CARE+ resource package, which is available for free at: tinyurl.com/4cjxwjsp

U of Michigan @umich.edu set aside funds from central to support researchers with unexpected disruption in federal funding for up to 6 months.

Are any other institutions doing this? Seems like a good move.

#NIH investigators: For RFAs and PAs that have an expiration date that is before the date you plan to submit, are you proceeding to prepare the submission or waiting to see if it is renewed? e.g., The F32 has an expiration of mid-May before the August due date. How do we guide busy post-docs?

PAXLOVID alert.
Went to a pharmacy to pick up a Paxlovid Rx for (for real) a friend. Out-of-pocket cost for one course of treatment was almost $800, discounted from Pfizer's charge of $1500.
Medicare subsidy for Paxlovid expired 2 weeks ago, & no one has given thought to how to make it accessible.
