5. I don't know that US will ever be a stable place for science again. I know that sounds nihilistic but the 50% of the country that voted for Trump is not going anywhere and they appear to be ok with blowing up the entire research infrastructure for shits and giggles.

A couple of related-unrelated thoughts that have swirling in my head:

1. This is a bad time to become a new PI in the US. Probably the worst since WWII. If you're negotiating for a position, know your road is way harder than it was for the people on your TT committee. Negotiate accordingly.

Interesting “The compact asks universities…to require undergraduate applicants to take the SAT or ACT.” I’m not sure the white supremacists of the regime are going to like where this goes.

This is Russ Vought's wet dream playing out in real time. Pray for the NIH.

We are now in the domain of not just illegal impoundments, but targeted illegal impoundments to punish liberal spaces. Not different from what Trump is doing to to universities.

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
mattcameron.bsky.social
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.
"Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians not directly taking part in hostilities, even if they are believed to be smuggling drugs."

4014 fewer grants funded in FY25. Did I read that right?
jeremymberg.bsky.social
Here are the results in terms of the number of projects.

The number of funded projects in FY2025 is 4014 fewer than the number for FY2024.

2/3
A grant showing the number of projects funded for FY2021 through FY2025. The number for FY2025 lagged behind and did not catch up with 4014 fewer projects funded in FY2025 compared with FY2024.

“Solved a self imposed crisis meant to harm science with a solution that also harms science, just not quite as much” is a bit unwieldy for a headline.

For example: of the 26 most recent NIGMS, R35 NGAs, 9 appear to be MYF. By my count, instead of 26 awards, NIGMS could have funded 62.

🚨🚨 NEW DOCUMENTS FROM EPSTEIN'S ESTATE DETAILING HIS DAILY SCHEDULE:

They show meetings with Steve Bannon, Peter Thiel, and a potential visit to Epstein’s Island for Elon Musk. Prince Andrew is listed as a passenger on Epstein’s jet.

DOJ must release the Epstein files NOW.

Trump: "It's too much liquid. Too many different things are going into that baby at too big a number. The size of this thing when you look at it. It's like 80 different vaccines and beyond vaccines."

Jesus. We are our own worst enemy sometimes.

Just drop the whole "of course the NIH needs reform, but..." stuff altogether. Now is NOT the time for nuanced conversations, as this piece in the NYT perfectly demonstrates.
angierasmussen.bsky.social
Of course some processes at NIH & in US science in general should be reformed. But uncritically presenting Jay Bhattacharya as a naive idealist rather than a hypocrite & political operative charged with NIH’s destruction is wildly divorced from reality.

To recap, Trump signed a proclamation saying that after midnight tonight, no one with an H-1B visa may enter the US unless they have paid $100,000. However, anonymous White House officials are saying it doesn't apply to people with current H-1B visas — yet there is NO official guidance! None!

An absolute clown show.

Avoiding chaos like this is one of the many reasons a for *not* having EOs be the normal method of legislating or regulating. You really want more careful review than “Steve Miller doodled it on a napkin and Trump signed it with a sharpie.”

Trump administration tries to tamp down panic for high-skill visa holders after last-minute overhaul
The president announced Friday that H-1B visas will now come with a $100,000 annual fee, but a U.S. official said it will only apply to new visa applicants.

This will negatively impact residency applicants needing/currently on an H1B too. It's that time of the year.
