In the United States we have 7 times as many monuments to confederate generals than we do to our founding fathers. Approximately 100 confederate monuments have been removed but over 1,700 Confederate monuments and other symbols still exist in public spaces across the nation.

FYI if you're in LA this fall into next spring, two art spaces—MOCA & The Brick—will be hosting a show built around decommissioned Confederate monuments & contemporary artists' responses to them. Co-curated by Hamza Walker & Kara Walker. I think it'll be fascinating & timely the-brick.org/monuments

LA wasn't founded by the Dutch or the British. It was founded by 44 Mexican pobladores, the vast majority of whom were mestizo, Indigenous or afro mestizo. What Stephen Miller is trying to do is erase LA history.

I explored this many moons ago in Guernica:

Remapping LA
Before California was West, it was North and it was East: the uppermost periphery of the Mexican Empire, and the arrival point for Chinese immigrants making the perilous journey from Guangdong.

Every flashbang could instead be a meal for a poor kid. Every hotel room for a National Guardsman deployed to fire at our neighbors could house a homeless vet. Every "less-than-lethal" bullet pulled from a journalist's eye could be already needed healthcare for anyone else. All of this is a choice.

Magritte shows us how easy it is to draw false conclusions from images. We assume his painting is real and the painting on the easel is a representation. When in fact the painting-within-a-painting depicts a depiction.
