Tarje, now at the University of Exeter, and Simon began assembling their teams. They would need to develop an ultra-high-frequency variant of seismology. A big obstacle was cost. In 2022, suitable sensors cost $10,000 (£7,500) apiece. They managed to repurpose other kit: Tarje found that a geophone developed by a Slovakian experimental music outfit worked just as well, and cost only $100. Now one of our scientists, Jiayao Meng, is developing a sensor for about $10. In time, we should be able to use the accelerometers in mobile phones, reducing the cost to zero. As for generating seismic waves, we get all the signal we need by hitting a small metal plate with a welder’s hammer.

#OnThisDay Nov 14, 1860: Minneapolis is finally linked to the outside world by telegraph. Service is poor, with newspapers constantly apologizing over delayed reporting due to downed wires, adverse weather, or in one instance "the mysterious influence of moonbeams on the electric current."
The first telegraph wires into Minneapolis were strung across the Mississippi River parallel to the Hennepin Avenue Bridge. This is the 2nd version of the bridge built of stone in 1870. Service improved when the railroad arrived in 1862. Cables were strung out to the west along it. This is Washington and 4th street.

The Torch 2 injection molds are being made. This is the last 3D printed working model. There are just a few fiddly bits on the PCB we are finalizing.

Smol lady hands so hard to tell scale- it's a little chunky at 188mm x 60mm x 60mm but still much smaller than the original Torch kit.

We've already had dangerous and mislabeled Far-UVC shown this year, the manufacturers saw there is zero blowback from that, so have no reason to stop. There's nothing to stop schools from buying bad Far-UVC. Yes, Nukit emitters are properly third-party tested, but what if schools choose something else? Most companies won't even submit to third-party testing of their power output. Who wants to point an emitter of unknown power at their kid all day? Because the manufacturer pinky promised they aren't lying like last time? It's hard to advocate for Far-UVC in schools *right now*, when the industry fights regulation and refuses to self-regulate. Most "Far-UVC advocates" are conflict-averse, so just make meek "We want Far-UVC" posts for easy likes and social capital, or have conflicts of interest with Far-UVC manufacturing and won't insistently push for any sort of standards or even demand third-party testing.
