Gravitational waves are often caused by merging black holes. But where do the merging black holes form? #extragalactic ☄️🧪

Tristan Bruel et al. (incl. @carlrodriguez.bsky.social & @jorgitomoreno.bsky.social) use the FIRE simulations to predict how many black hole mergers come from star clusters!
Their Figure 3, showing the number of star clusters producing a binary black hole merger (BBH merger) as a function of their parameters. Being massive seems to be the most important thing. Most enlightening plot is on the right, which shows that clusters weighing more than a million solar masses can have 100+ mergers.
