"Va detto che il calcio è uno strumento molto utile per insegnare la politica o capire il mondo, visto che permette di raggiungere persone che normalmente non raggiungeresti con scritti più apertamente politici, e offre esempi comprensibili a tutti."

Given the immense scarcity of qualified reviewers, this is harming all real scholars. All journals should update their 'author instructions' to state that if it can be shown that a submission is generated with AI, the author will be blacklisted for future submissions to that journal.

I'm peer reviewing a manuscript for a reputable publisher and came across fake references which must be AI-generated - including to an article attributed to me which sounds fascinating but which I never wrote.

The technology in itself is impressive, though obviously not the miracle cure that some people say.
But: overhype, poor implementation, good old human greed and lack of understanding of the social context are turning this into a nightmare.

MIT’s NANDA initiative found that 95% of generative AI deployments fail after interviewing 150 execs, surveying 350 workers, and analyzing 300 projects. The real “productivity gains” seem to come from layoffs and squeezing more work from fewer people not AI.
MIT report: 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing
There’s a stark difference in success rates between companies that purchase AI tools from vendors and those that build them internally.

A useful (and a bit daunting) thread for people like me who are updating their syllabi right now 🤦🏻‍♂️
eayers0.bsky.social
Yesterday I messed around with GPT + my syllabi: running through sample assignments, readings, getting more info on subjects I'm teaching, etc. so I could get a sense of students might see, and...so much of it was totally wrong, made up, etc. Like, we know this is a thing, but it was so absurd.

A terrible decision that will affect access for students in full time work, carers and mature students. Signed as a writer and Bristol alum.

Without a humanities degree other subjects don't really make much sense. You can gain technical skill but a humanities degree teaches you the complexities of applying that knowledge. I say that as a lawyer & sociologist. You see things differently—you see them better—in fact, you see them full stop.

‘Useful phrases for the murder mystery writer abroad’ (my cartoon for this week’s Guardian Books)
Title:
Useful phrases for the murder mystery writer abroad

An eight-panel cartoon showing a writer in a series of situations in a foreign country.

Panel 1: looking at historic buildings saying
"Kia bela vilaĝo!" which is translated below as "What a lovely village!"

Panel 2: in a pretty garden asking the gardener "Ĉu ĉi tiuj estas venenaj" meaning "Are any of these plants poisonous?

Panel 3: in a bar asking the server “Kie oni povas aĉeti pafilon?" meaning "
Can one purchase a firearm nearby?"

Panel 4: on a beach asking a fisherman "Ĉu la tajdo povus forporti kadavron?" meaning "Could the tide carry a dead body away?"

Panel 5: approached by a police officer and saying "Saluton, oficiro." which is translated below as "Hello officer."

Panel 6: being marched to the police station protesting "Okazis miskompreno!" meaning "There has been a misunderstanding!"

Panel 7: in the interrogation room the officer holds up a moleskine notebook, the writer explains "La murdo en mia notlibro estas fikcia." meaning "The murder planned in my notebook is fictional."

Panel 8: locked in a cell asking "Mi ŝatus telefoni al la Brita konsulejo." which means "I would like to telephone the British consulate."

Note: The foreign language used by the writer in the cartoon is Esperanto. It has not been proofread by an Esperanto speaker so there may be errors.

In the case of our research, which dealt with difficulty of setting up interpreting in vast rural territories with specific pockets of linguistic diversity, it made me think: how to reconcile the need for an underlying infrastructure with the importance of interpersonal relations in community work.
andreaciribuco.bsky.social
The "translation and infrastructure" panel was Anne O'Connor's and Raluca Tanasescu's idea, and it sparked a lot of conversations about the way in which infrastructures of tools, people, laws and institutions shape the transmissions of ideas.
andreaciribuco.bsky.social
It's been great to present our work on community interpreting in rural Ireland (created in collaboration with Iryna Andrusiak, and earlier research developed with @pilarluzrodrigues.bsky.social ) at @estleeds25.bsky.social .
In the picture I am standing in front of the podium in a lecture hall, together with another presenter in the panel

17 years after my Erasmus, it feels great (but also strange) to visit @universityofleeds.bsky.social , this time @lcsleeds.bsky.social for the 11th EST Congress. I started my BA project (which became my first ever published paper) in this library. Maybe it will help me finish this year's paper too 😁

Once more for the back seats: LLMs like #chatgpt do not "understand" a word of the answers they give you. They are literally trained to recognise patterns in the data they were given, and come up with realistic-sounding patterns of their own.
