“One of the negative consequences AI is having on students is that it is hurting their ability to develop meaningful relationships with teachers, the report finds. Half of the students agree that using AI in class makes them feel less connected to their teachers.”

Ultimately, the implications of this disaster extend far beyond Texas and underscore our increased vulnerability to infrastructural failures as extreme weather events become more common.

Frederick also emphasizes another meaning of the phrase “disabled power:” the individual and collective resilience and creativity Texans with disabilities exercised to survive the disaster.

Frederick highlights how disabled people and those with chronic health conditions are uniquely harmed when basic infrastructure such as power and water systems fail.

Can we just admire Jane Fonda, please? She is a true patriot, inspiration, and role model.

"When I feel scared, I look to history. I wish there were a secret playbook with all the answers — but there never has been. The only thing that has ever worked — time and time again — is solidarity."
Text from the Variety article on the sub quoted piece:

In a letter inviting her peers to join the re-established group, Fonda writes: "I'm 87 years old. I've seen war, repression, protest, and backlash. I've been celebrated, and I've been branded an enemy of the state. But I can tell you this: this is the most frightening moment of my life. When I feel scared, I look to history. I wish there were a secret playbook with all the answers — but there never has been. The only thing that has ever worked — time and time again — is solidarity: binding together, finding bravery in numbers too big to ignore, and standing up for one another."

ICYMI: The WSJ published a damning report today on the deterioration of FEMA, and I explained why it is ludicrous (and bad use of tax money) to expect state and local governments to maintain the infrastructure needed to effectively respond to major disasters. open.substack.com/pub/balanced...

Legacy air-conditioning giant Carrier has a simple solution to ACs stressing the grid: Pair them with a battery that charges up when power demand is low.

Here’s how it’s testing the concept.

“I’m emotionally shellshocked right now,” said one professor in the Texas Tech system. “What does it say about academic freedom? It says we don’t have it.” The professor spoke by phone from the inside of a car to avoid being overheard by colleagues.

A sleeper political issue of the next few years is the rising costs of electricity. AI & data centers are driving up demand & the Trump Administration is making it harder to add clean energy supply. I joined @chrislhayes.bsky.social on #WITHpod to talk about it: open.spotify.com/episode/32ps...

Tradwife culture is not just aiming to restore “traditional” gender roles, according to researchers of extremism. It is also a force in formulating a new model of womanhood: one that incorporates strong religious identity, a specific feminine aesthetic, and far-right ideas.

There's a reason they chose this spot: it's in rural North Louisiana, one of the poorest places in the country, a place national media barely knows exists, a place with essentially no local journalism, where people and resources can be exploited (and lied to) with no consequence

We do not have to accept bad-faith pretexts from people hoping to destroy higher education. Every class goes beyond what is in the syllabus, because a 8-page outline can’t reasonably capture a semester’s worth of learning.

Defending this, or playing devil’s advocate, is weird.
