Why I get cranky about out of context debt-to-gdp ratios, fiscal anchors, and how this all leads to austerity that inevitably ends up hurting those if us that need support the most

Now in wide release, my latest YouTube episode where @lindsaytedds.bsky.social and I talk about what we're not talking about when we talk about austerity #cdnpoli

Part of my issue with prioritizing government spending on “capital” in this way is that it is government's job to invest in human and social capital too. These are fuzzier concepts, harder to measure and evaluate, but absolutely essential, especially now.

[email protected]'s @angella.bsky.social explains why now is the time to defend jobs and protect public services.

A promotional graphic for the “Carney’s Cuts” podcast with Angella MacEwen. The text at the top reads “PODCASTS | EMPOWERING WORKERS” and “Carney’s Cuts with Angella MacEwen.” Below that, it says, “Listen now on the Perspectives Journal Podcast.” The background features a photo of Donald Trump and Mark Carney standing outdoors in suits, with trees in the background. Trump wears a dark blue suit with a red tie, and Carney wears a dark suit and tie, smiling while looking toward Trump.

Part of these changes will make it hard to compare spending across years, I hate breaks like this in data. But may be useful to see it this way - have to wait and see in November!

Americans voters were stupid, venal and complacent in the run-up to the 2024 election.

Everything happening now was completely predictable if you simply paid attention to Trump's own words and the credible reporting about his first term in office.

CUPE’s National convention in Toronto this week - very exciting, but also, I'm in coordinating group chats on 4 different platforms, so I’m glad that there’s still competition among messaging applications if nothing else.

If now is not the time to be alarmist, I’m not sure when is.
gregsargent.bsky.social
I asked Chris Murphy if he privately talks to Dem colleagues about why they don't sound the alarm loudly. His answers were depressing. Dems tell him they don't want to be "alarmist" or that "democracy" didn't work in 2024, so they want to stick to health care. 5/

I get a lot of stuff wrong but my early call on all of this was that it's simply wrong to engage in this as an argument over congestion policy. I said on the podcast that it is, instead, an argument over who has the right to public space — and the Premier has decided the allocation.
cbailey6.bsky.social
I don't want to shock anyone, but I don't think that removing the bike lanes is going to improve congestion. The provincial government is putting people at risk for a few parking spots in midtown Toronto.
The documents also indicate that the government may reinstate on-street parking on Yonge Street, in the 400-metre section where the bike lane would be removed.

I feel like someone told Trump the shutdown was fine, that it just gave them more space to implement Project 2025 - and this was his response. Things are not ok.
victinibcn.bsky.social
Cringe and weird, Trump posted this AI generated video feat. himself, JD Vance and Russ Vought as the grim reaper.
Trump is unbothered by the shutdown he provoked and believes this gives him the green light to implement the 2025 agenda.

Some Canadians are expressing great concern about the federal deficit. But it has been relatively low since the pandemic surge, other than a one-time jump in early 2024 due mainly to Indigenous claim settlements. The concern should be the coming two years or so, not the present.

Yup, right out of the playbook, privatize the most profitable parts and then complain whats left “costs too much money”

Canada Post's "loss" is the private sector's gain - please, for the love of all that is good, if you're going to try and use math to understand this, finish the equation.
angella.bsky.social
For public infrastructure and services, can we start talking about how to design them to do what we need, what they can enable, how they can save households and the private sector money and create a level playing field ... instead of treating them like businesses (which they are not!)

The government is reducing service standards and Canada Post’s biggest advantage: its nationwide network.

This plan is about cutting back the postal service instead of investing to give it new revenue tools through things like postal banking. It’s shameful.
