The thing that throws off the normal wisdom of revealed preference here is that we (capitalist economies) like to act as though saving up money or even gold - spending power - is equivalent to saving up goods and services

I think the thing with the debate about ‘Pro-Natalism’ is that everyone kind of dances around saying explicitly is that revealed preferences show lots of people think having kids of sort of sucks for the parent but is clearly necessary for society.

I used to have trailer park pronatalist in my bio and it still kind of fits my thinking tho tbc

(Obviously some people really don’t want kids at all, not ever, under any circumstances and that’s fine but that’s genuinely a minority)
annadistracted.bsky.social
Trouble is definitions of healthy, mature, financially stable enough are slippery!
annadistracted.bsky.social
I think what people are dancing around is more that having kids REALLY sucks for some relatively small but hard to predict group of people. For most people it’s good, and you can kind of tell that people generally expect that if they are mature/stably rich they’ll like it

And some smaller segment would be ppl who don’t have them yet but plan to or don’t plan not to

Anecdotal but I think childless people are weirdly more ok with this than other retirees/older people who have finished raising kids
tznkai.bsky.social
Something I've found is that people respond to this idea very differently depending on if you put any effort into hiding you're doing this. Broadly speaking, childless people are fine paying taxes for public schools and not fine paying a childlessness tax even though they're basically the same thing
opinionhaver.bsky.social
My most controversial take on this is probably that while I think reproductive freedom should be sacrosanct, I don’t really have any problem with additional taxes on (high income) childless people. Someone gotta pay into the pensions!
annadistracted.bsky.social
I think the term “childless” is almost as important the tax credit vs extra tax thing. Most of the people taxed extra/not getting the tax credit would be parents of grown children not childless people
annadistracted.bsky.social
I probably wouldn’t have jumped to this read without the “most controversial” and “reproductive rights” framing tho tbh
annadistracted.bsky.social
But like this is not how “childless” reads! The lady who had 4 kids but they’re all grown now is not “childless”
annadistracted.bsky.social
I am always confused when people say things like this because like do you mean *currently* childless people (whose kids are grown) or like CHILDLESS childless? Because we should subsidize people currently raising kids more but idk about the rest of it

What do you think farms are?!?

I don’t want to be too mean but man suggestions like these (if earnest) make me want to scream
annadistracted.bsky.social
Ok I’m just going to inarticulately screech now

The Bluesky anti-semitism problem is a little bit more serious than the “getting into fights with the CEO” problem.

Like this is such a wrong statement that anyone making it should not be taken seriously at all (this piece annoyed the shit out of me at the time and I have not had the opportunity to litigate it lol)

(Thread is fine but that swap is so beautiful to me)

I’m awake so I’m going to write an essay on the term “shawty evidence”
sodrock.bsky.social
Also they ran just incredibly awful commentary with incredibly shawty evidence (which I’m sure will become feature at CBS now). For example, the author of this piece claimed the Allies won WWII with inferior technology minus the atomic bomb lol

Jess Waters recycling the same guy over and over to represent “former” different enemies

(Both those things being “exaggerated story about dumb work thing” and “I have nothing to gain by getting involved in with this as that guy is Teflon and a jerk”)

But also I think “I lied poorly and condescendingly and it went badly” is also kind of funny lol
