I did read the thread. I know it’s about a two earner family. It does not make a meaningful difference tho. I don’t love means testing and this is not a thread about means testing. It’s about understanding what words gd mean. Go away

Go away man this is stupid. Of course it’s under the two worker median. Most poverty and indeed most precarity is about ratio of workers to non workers in a household. The household he describes is not meaningfully precarious.

You’re being really obnoxious because at no point did I say we shouldn’t make places more affordable. This isn’t a thread about whether to build more houses (we should!). But we should also recognize wtf poverty actually is and it’s not “slightly under median in Brookline”

That’s kind of the point — the first thing they’d likely do is move to a cheaper place and this family in particular seemingly CAN! Without even leaving the metro area or moving in with a relative! I’m sympathetic to using somewhat local stats but not THAT local

That’s very silly. The hypothetical family literally does not have to live in the most expensive part of the Boston area, and I doubt it’s under median for *that*. If some problem were to crop up for this hypothetical family (especially since they’re renters) they would leave Brookline

Yeah poor people use "I can't afford" to mean they literally don't have the money in their bank account, middle class people use it to mean "It would reduce my financial stability" and UMC+ use it to mean "I would prefer that my savings grow faster".
