I was interviewing a leading Indian AI academic on a podcast yesterday about the alignment of renewables and AI and I mentioned that IMO China and India were leading on growth in energy while the US was still looking backwards. He was nonplussed. That clearly wasn't what he was used to hearing...

In the first half of 2025, renewables became the biggest source of global electricity for the first time, as wind & solar growth exceeded global demand growth

Shocking that it's China & India leading - EU & USA have fossil power growing

This would be an amazing thing to offer in poorer areas of the UK. I'm thinking Jaywick. Every time I walk through the (potentially beautiful) place I wonder when the artists will move in @tendringmag.bsky.social @tdalc.bsky.social Wonder how they administered the scheme to make it work so well?

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Yes, indeed. Recommend reading this linked post also joanna-bryson.blogspot.com/2025/02/gene... where Professor Bryson says what really needs to be said about AI and agency.

Spain’s rapid wind and solar growth has CUT the link between gas and electricity prices 🌪️☀️

🇪🇸’s decoupling of gas and electricity prices happened faster than in other European countries, making it one of the cheapest power markets in Europe.

As a Bluesky user in good standing obviously I love TheModernHouse.com. The best bit is working out where the TV normally sits, which they've removed for the pictures. Bonus points here for proving it with an accidental glimpse in the fourth pic

Book podcast!!

In a change from tech, this week I was a guest on Tim Lewis's fun podcast Book Chat. We chatted about 8 novels, from murder mysteries to YA to fantasy to SciFi, all linked by world building - books that define worlds other creators build on.

Word of the (windy) day: thigmomorphogenesis. It's when plants adapt their growth depending on their physical environment.

I am pinning my hopes on it as I watch my neighbours blue cedar, which if it fell with the prevailing wind - like today - would squash my house. www.ebsco.com/research-sta...

Because if you reverse it: "degrowth" or "stagnate" that is obviously not something anyone with sense is aiming for. Your mission cannot be "be alive tomorrow". If the obvious response is well, d'uh then my suggestion is your message is unlikely to inspire

Good article from Goodall. In terms of renewables I rail against the UK's lack of strategy but we do at least have a mission - convert the UK to renewables. To lack a mission, which is what the Starmer project lacks, is disastrous and inexcusable. "Growth" is not a mission. How do I know?

The near consensus view was that Keir Starmer's conference speech was his best yet. I heard something different. I think it was born of a profound weakness- and in its own way set up his own future failure.

The song is inspired by a @mooseallain.bsky.social thread about inserting Where's Wally into other media.

It took me three years, and it's more from Wally's point of view* rather than me singing "oh look there's a guy with glasses and a stripey jumper", but I'm pretty chuffed with it.

Spain has a multi layered strategy. They are not only building loads of renewable capacity, via dynamic tariffs they are leading businesses and households towards how to use it effectively www.cleanenergywire.org/factsheets/q...
annecurrie.bsky.social
The US strategy of spending huge (brute force style) is not appropriate to the UK and even some US states are baulking (Texas, ironically enough, has a renewables strategy based on cheaper deals for large flexible loads)
annecurrie.bsky.social
Great writeup of GreenIO conference last week, where I spoke on the strategic imperative of aligning AI and renewable energy. China and India are being clear on how they will do it. What's the UK strategy? Who knows.

it is nowhere near as simple as good folk and not good folk

Isn't this bollocks? There was loads of research into this question.
It's 80% of folk, if they think that's what everyone else wants to do www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/a...

The question is how do you both avoid the situation & train folk to think independently. That isn't how people think by default

NEW ANALYSIS | Spain is successfully decoupling electricity prices from gas power costs 🇪🇸⚡️

Spain reduced the number of hours where electricity prices exceed gas costs by 75% since 2019.

As a result, Spain's electricity prices were 32% lower than the EU average in H1-2025.

I love this article. The next step is to encourage governments to have national strategies for its use. For example China's East Data, West Computing strategy www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... or India's time of use tariffs carnegieendowment.org/india/ideas-...

Renewables are a masterclass in learning-by-doing. Each doubling of deployment cuts costs via experience curves: better manufacturing, finance & supply chains.

Result:

Solar now cheapest new power in many regions
Falling battery costs enable flexibility
Electrification gets more attractive
