Get ready for the next stage of genocide: when all the people who stood by & said nothing while their colleagues were getting fired are suddenly going to have *so much* to say
tweets from @annia on Dec 31, 2023: "Calling people "crazy" & "unhinged" if they object to a genocide is how genocides happen.

When this genocide is over, the same pundits now calling people "crazy" are going to launch into performative hand-wringing & pearl-clutching about how could "we" have let this happen?

@annia
Oh, the panels they'll hold! Think tankers & fancy academics & analysts & pundits will throw around nonsense words like "the optics" & they will all shake their heads & cluck about How it Happened.

Meanwhile the people who actually tried to stop it will have been fired."

Here's how you can help make a book of 19th century fairy tales available for everyone to read for free.
Frances Brownes was a 19th century Irish poet ("the blind poetess of Donegal"), whose best-known work is Granny's Wonderful Chair, an 1857 fairytale collection. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances...

Now: Hundreds assembling in the Chicago Loop for a march and rally to demand the National Guard leave town. Folks chanting "Donald Trump you racist clown! You're not welcome in this town!"

Around 30 protesters and hecklers here in the free speech area tonight. Curfew is in 15 minutes (reportedly, state police were fairly chill about curfew yesterday, but did make the few people still here move across Lexington).

Someone is tempting ISP troopers with a donut on a fishing pole.

And I'll tell you, the gyro that guy made ... I still dream about it. And the crazy thing is that the lamb wasn't even the best thing on the menu: the best thing on the menu was the halibut (which Pete had flown in whole from Alaska once a week to this dinky Central Illinois town).

I remember seeing posts on FB from old HS acquaintances of mine from Cambria County, PA who were super-jazzed about chanting "lock her up" when Trump came to Johnstown. Later I learned that another excited attendee at that high-energy event was a neo-Nazi named Kevin Strom. bsky.app/profile/seth...

There's a reason that Kevin Strom, a neo-Nazi with a child porn addiction, chose Johnstown, PA to be the place where he would set up shop after his break with the National Alliance. When Strom attended a Trump rally in Johnstown in 2016, he saw his envisioned future for America in embryo.

I WENT TO a Donald Trump rally yesterday in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, along with Vanessa Neubauer. It was an interesting experience. I've already expressed my reservations about Donald Trump on this program, but I have to say - it's a pretty amazing feeling to be in a crowd of 10,000 people - 99 per cent. of them White people here in 90 per cent. White Cambria County - cheering their heads off when the man on the podium, who may soon be in the White House, says that he's going to close the border and build a wall between the US and Mexico, condemns the media as liars right to their faces, calls for America to be "one people, under one flag and one God," and outs the War Hag as a "corrupt globalist" who ought to be in prison. It was also quite a gratifying experience to have a young man come up to me in the middle of all this, e

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Relatedly, this @brianbeutler.bsky.social idea of the "median experience of tyranny" is a good way to say that while majorities oppose the lawbreaking/abuses of power, Miller is banking on the middle lacking deep conviction about all of it (as I suggest)

This attracted oddly little notice, but Stephen Miller was recently asked directly if he has discussed invoking the Insurrection Act with Trump. He evaded the question.

Miller, a master manipulator of Trump, is clearly nudging him in that direction right now.

Trump just threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act if governors/judges act *lawfully* within the constitutional system in ways that displease him.

Miller's statements reveal their real position: Trump's power to invent pretexts for emergency actions is limitless.

Stephen Miller believes that if he supercharges the debate over Trump's abuses of power with enough propaganda, he can polarize it and force low-info voters to embrace authoritarianism. Pritzker/Newsom have accepted that this requires an information war in response.

JB Pritzker and Gavin Newsom are doing something new and important: They understand Stephen Miller's theory of fascist power politics, and they've developed a theory on how to combat it. More Dems need to reckon with Miller's understanding of the moment.

New from me:

He wants to supercharge searing civil tensions to get low-information voters to embrace their inner authoritarian. Exactly two Democrats appear to fully grasp this.

Miller has a real theory of the case: A latent majority out there can be sleepwalked into authoritarianism with enough numbing agitprop. Polls show majorities reject the autocratic abuses but Miller plainly thinks voters in the middle lack conviction about any of it.

dragging them out of their beds in the middle of the night. Didn’t ask if people were citizens. Didn’t give people chance to get documents to prove it. Clear message should be: what if that were your family? Dems want govt to help people, not terrify them. Traumatizing kids should never be ok. 2/2

The story of the apartment building raid hasn’t gotten nearly enough national attention. Miller talking about it as successful takedown of gang. Is that even true? Governors & Dems outside IL can talk about jack booted thugs handcuffing naked children & 1/1

These stupid fascists wrongly believe the majority of Americans are selfish and hateful.

But even if these stupid fascists were right—again, they’re not—they’re still too stupid to make good on their campaign promises to create the material comfort necessary to foster complacency towards fascism.
