Maybe the AI bubble is simply the biggest captured fandom of our moment

“All of this feels ridiculous because that’s exactly what it is. But the larger goal is to inure you to the strangeness of it all so that when these products — be they movies, shows, or TikToks — finally come to market, your reaction is ‘Sure, why not?’”

perhaps instead of cowering under a blanket labeled "health care," democrats should respond and advance on the issues that move people. this, of course, would require a foundation of conviction and principle, which may be asking too much of the party's leadership and strategists.

First time this guy has ever made me laugh
Comedian Tim Dillon said on his podcast last month that he signed up for financial reasons.
He said he had been offered "a large sum of money" - $375,000 for one performance - and said that other comedians had been offered as much as $1.6 million. He told his detractors to "get over it," adding, "So what if they have slaves, they're paying me enough to look the other way."
But in an episode of the Tim Dillon Podcast last week, the comedian announced he'd been removed from the lineup for the comments he made about the country's record on slavery.

The AI boom is starting to look a lot like the internet’s early years. Not every investment will pay off, but even the “extra” servers usually find a purpose.

New York City, US capital of hating AI 😎
www.adweek.com/brand-market...
“I know people in New York hate AI, and things like AI companionship and wearables, probably more than anywhere else in the country,” Schiffmann said. “So I bought more ads than anyone has ever done with a lot of white space so that they would socially comment on the topic.”

The rebranding of reactionary gender and biological essentialism as “heterodox and challenging ideas to which liberal students must be exposed” is one of the greatest achievements of our stupid era. Congratulations to the reactionary centrists who helped make it happen - you dupes, you utter dolts.

When a typo in your Google search leads to new and exciting philosophical positions
AI Overview: "Dental realism"refers to the philosophical debate about whether teeth exist independently of human perception, a concept rooted in metaphysical realism. While realism asserts an objective reality for teeth, idealist philosophies contend that teeth's existence is tied to our consciousness and perception. Philosophers use this idea, for example, to discuss the ethics of tooth extraction, examining whether a procedure impacts a real entity or merely a subjective experience.

Lots of people who would never otherwise have tuned in to Jimmy Kimmel will tune in on Tuesday. It will be the most listened-to monologue of his career. Good luck, man! Say something memorable. Celebrate your newly restored First Amendment rights by putting them to good use.

Rewatched All the President's Men last night and man that movie is a showcase of great phone acting - Redford and Hoffman, of course, but also actors building offscreen characters from just a few lines like "how DARE you call and ask ME about a 25 thousand dollar check??"

there is a point here i want to amplify. the free speech defenders of the mainstream seem to have no awareness that actual free speech is often more fractious and destabilizing than civil and respectful. a society where speech is genuinely free isn’t the deferential space they want it to be.

one of the common threads you will frequently find among devoted adult readers & writers is that as kids the librarian let them get away with reading whatever the fuck they wanted. so much of the scifi and fantasy I fell in love with as a kid was very much Not For Kids, but it made my brain light up
keezyyoung.bsky.social
every time we talk about parental permission in terms of book banning I'm like fuck man. kids have rights too. a 17-year-old should be able to check out books at the library without Mom and Dad stepping in. so should a 10-year-old or 7 or whatever. kids deserve SOME goddamn freedom and privacy
