Abysmal messaging. First, politicians address sports-related issues all the time. Second, trans people in sports has *already been handled* by leagues and communities. Every major sports body has criteria for trans athletes! Most communities do not give a shit. The problem is bigots ignoring that.

Here is some advice to literally any reporter working for a major outlet: use this time to build up a following, an independent one who knows you for you, interact with your readers and tell them you appreciate them, get your outlet to buy you a DSLR and tripod and a good mic, and your own list.
If you work as a staff writer for a newspaper or magazine, here are things you rarely worry about:
1. getting a regular paycheck
2. health insurance
3. marketing/distributing your work
4. finding someone to cover for you when you have an emergency
5. access to editors
6. advertising/subscriptions
