This moment from our latest episode with science writer @edyong209.bsky.social is 🔥

We asked Ed — how do we talk up the benefits of science in the face of government cuts? He told us that's the wrong approach. 🧪

The official database of works eligible for the Anthropic AI settlement has been released and, as I suspected, many authors are screwed. Basically, if your books weren't officially registered with the US Copyright Office you're out of luck. 1/ secure.anthropiccopyrightsettlement.com/lookup/results
Welcome to the Anthropic Copyright Settlement Website
Are you the legal or beneficial copyright owner of a book included in the Anthropic Copyright Settlement?
You could get a payment from the $1.5 billion Settlement.

This is good advice, if you have one -- unclear how accurate that database is, as yet. I'm to understand the original search form just polled LibGen in general and not *specifically* what was pulled and scraped, and further the copyright issue muddies that, as well.

On the Anthropic database claim:

TALK TO YOUR AGENT (if you have one).

They will be able to help with claims and also payment/bank account requirements. US-based agents are already compiling a list of works and authors through their agents' association. Non-US agents should also be making lists.

Excellent point. We have our no-AI policy for submitters of both words and art (smallwondersmag.com/submissions/) but haven’t explicitly spelled out that we don’t use AI in place of first readers, to summarize pieces, or to talk to our contributors or staff. We’ll add that to our site.

Well that's the creepiest thing I've seen in a while...

Sage advice. The templating you do for your newsletter seems like a game changer. (But where's the fun in no strikes?)

Boosting Dave Goodman's newsletter, which is always a treat to find in my inbox. No idea how he blogs and newsletters and writes books, so I'm planning to strike and steal his secrets when the time is right.

Just finished the fantastic ergodic creepfest that is Basilisk by Matt Wixey. Comp title on the cover was "House of Leaves for hackers", and it absolutely delivered. www.goodreads.com/book/show/19...

Lately I've been thinking of this as "platform logic" bc it's pretty much always got a platform

You aren't connected to a person or people. You're connected to the platform, which can facilitate specific types of interactions with people.

You don't have a dr, you have a care platform
doesnotcare.lol
And! You have zero continuity of care. You see a different doc every time you go - there’s no ONE person looking at your chart to notice trends/patterns.

You get worse care - things get missed - you get *worse.*

Insurance company makes even *more* money.

It’s gross af.

Well, someone's ambitious! And here's me still spelling out "necessary" with what my Year 2 teacher taught me: "Never eat celery. Eat sausage sandwiches and remain young."

You have my blessing! I absolutely won't delete this and then invoice you forever.

Congrats on pub day, Nick! Who somehow found out that that "sci fi noir crime thriller" is the cheat code to my wallet.
bingewriting.bsky.social
This crazy sci fi noir crime thriller is out today in the UK and I can't wait for you all to read it!

Available in hardback, ebook, and audio from all reputable retailers (and probably some disreputable ones too!)

If you can, support your local indie!

🧵I’m putting the MRM contract ordeal behind me to focus on making more art, but I just had 1 more thing to say related to this. Throughout the past several months many writers have reached out to say things like, “I wanted to push back, but I’m a nobody” or “my piece was just a little poem.” 1/5
