Hello world! I'll be moving my ANC presence from Twitter/X to Bluesky.
aru5f02.bsky.social
Agreed. From my conversations with DDOT folks the vibe I get is this is the best they can do with the current administration. This is from the trails division, e.g.
aru5f02.bsky.social
Haha, yep. Maybe we can convince them that they need to add another set of PBLs to 8th 🤔
aru5f02.bsky.social
My goal is to discuss a supportive resolution in our October TAPS committee meeting, with a full ANC 5F vote on it later that month. If you have any thoughts, please send them my way!

Fresh NOI from @ddotdc.bsky.social - they're finally closing the gap between the crosstown cycletrack and the MBT! Trail plans here: trails.ddot.dc.gov/pages/michig...
NOI# 25-208-CPD
Re:
 Michigan Avenue NE Shared-Use Path
Dear Chairpersons,
Pursuant to the “Administrative Procedure Amendment Act of 2000” D.C. LAW 13-249 (48 DCR
3491 April 20, 2001), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is required to give a
written notice of our intent (NOI) to modify traffic and/or parking requirements. This letter is
being forwarded to you for the purpose of notification and solicitation of comments on our
intent to implement the following in your jurisdictions:
The installation of a 10-foot shared-use path along Michigan Avenue NE between Harewood
Dr and Monroe St NE.
Overview:
The Michigan Avenue Share-Use Path project provides both bicycle and pedestrian safety
improvements for users of this corridor. This proposed project closes a 0.2 mile gap in an
otherwise 2.1 mile section of connected and protected bicycle lanes and is an important part of
DDOT’s work to improve safety for all roadway users. It is a small but important portion of the
bike network that fills multiple gaps in the existing bike network by providing a safe
connections between the existing protected bike infrastructure to the east and west including
Irving St NE, Monroe St NE, and the Met Branch Trail as seen in the map below. The project will replace the existing sidewalk on the northern side of the corridor along Catholic
University with a 10-foot shared-use path extending from Harewood Rd / 4th St NE to Monroe
St NE. It will also improve the intersection at Monroe St and Michigan Ave NE to provide a safe
connection between this new path and the existing two-way protected bike lanes along
Monroe St NE. For the safety of bicyclists, the eastbound right-turn from Monroe Street onto
Michigan will no longer be allowed. This is necessary due to the limited visibility of the bike
lane while making that turn. Right turning vehicles will need to go to 7 th Street NE to make a
right turn. The existing and proposed cross sections are shown below: DDOT anticipates the following safety benefits with this project:
• An expanded biking / scooter route for people traveling along Michigan Avenue NE.
• Another connection to the Metropolitan Branch Trail.
• Improved comfort and safety for both pedestrians and bicyclists along Michigan Ave NE.
• Comfortable bicycle facilities for people traveling in and through the corridor.
• Improved comfort and safety due to the reduction of potential conflicts at Michigan Ave
and Monroe St NE.
• Reduction in motor vehicle trips due to faster and safer non-motorized travel options.

Power outage in Edgewood. According to their website, Pepco estimates restoration by 9pm. Report via their website so they have the most updated information.
aru5f02.bsky.social
Since a few folks have checked in with me, I figure it'd be good to put this in writing: I am not requesting a National Guard presence in Edgewood. The deployment of troops in DC against our will is based on false pretenses, and is a violation of our sovereignty.
rswirling.bsky.social
DC pals: please contact your ANC commissioner and let them know we do NOT want the National Guard in our neighborhoods.

Any benefits they might see to cleanup help or whatever are dramatically outweighed by the normalization of the military in our city. (I can’t believe I’m writing that sentence)
maustermuhle.bsky.social
Interesting: The director of D.C. government operations for the D.C. National Guard emailed the city's 300+ Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners today to ask for suggestions on projects where Guard can help on "neighborhood beautification efforts."

Officers from the 4th District did respond and take the report. The cyclist was cited by the responding officer(s).
aru5f02.bsky.social
I received a response:

The driver (of the vehicle) was traveling on Harewood Road, NE, when the cyclist collided with the vehicle (that had the right of way). The cyclist did suffer non-life threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital where they were treated & released. (ctd)
aru5f02.bsky.social
The last time there was a cyclist-involved crash (on the north side of Michigan at Harewood) it was 4D. I reached out to the 5D commander to see who responded to this one.

If anyone learns of more details about this crash, please send them my way.

Hearing there may have been a cyclist hit at 4th and Michigan this morning? Scene is weird, according to a friend, with just a bike, a delivery truck, and a police officer, which implies someone was transported.

Really sad to see Indigo get denied the zoning relief for their second restaurant.

5F02 has a spot open in the former Brookland Pint space. Come on over to this side of N Cap!

While this vote did not go the way I wanted, I remain committed to ensuring that restaurant wages are sustainable, livable, and fair. As we look to the budget and a need to find a solution without a repeal of I-82, I have invited representatives of our restaurants, the restaurant association...(1/3)

#BreakingNews - DC council votes 8-4 to temporarily pause $2 per hour wage increase in tipped worker law … to further assess impact … amid pledges that law itself won’t be repealed.
aru5f02.bsky.social
This caving to fear mongering from interest groups and the Executive does nothing but sow doubt and confusion, and has lessened my confidence in the ability of the Council members who voted for it to respect the people of DC.
aru5f02.bsky.social
I tried to reply to your email but got a bounceback. Here's what I wrote:

I find this immensely disappointing and paternalistic. I, along with 75% of the voting electorate, twice voted for an elimination of the tipped minimum wage. (ctd)

I make decisions based on what I believe is right for the people most affected, even when it’s hard.

I know some may disagree, and I respect that. But I won’t trade conviction for votes.

I had a wonderful ride with @swiderski.bsky.social, @bryanhart.bsky.social and other members of the #bikedc community at tonight's #RideOfSilence. It sucks that we have to come together under these circumstances, but it warms my heart to have a community such as ours to pay respects alongside.

Good morning from the new Trader Joe's Trader Joe's opening in Edgewood today near Brookland metro station.

ANC5F, especially @aru.io , worked hard to get this grocery store open with licenses approved in record time.

The line started forming at 6:30 for the 9am opening!

I stand ready to support the Hope Community Public Charter School - Tolson Campus community as they go through a difficult transition. See my statement on the school's forthcoming closure here 👇🏾
I am aware that today, the Hope Community Public Charter School - Tolson Campus Board of Directors announced a decision to relinquish their charter due to an inability to meet the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board’s (DCPCSB) conditions for school performance. Staff, teachers, and families have been informed that the school will close on June 8, 2025.

While school closures are never easy, my priority remains that every young person in the District of Columbia receives a quality education. As Hope CPCS - Tolson winds down its operations, I will work closely with the DCPCSB to ensure every family finds a new fit for their child for the 2025 - 2026 school year. I’m in touch with teachers and families, and stand ready to support this school community as they move through a difficult transition phase.
