Some news to share: After 25 years, today was my final day at the N&O. I moved to Chicago in October, but I was commuting and working remotely until the paper ended that agreement as of today.

I knew when we moved the end was near. That was my choice. It was time. I just wish it wasn’t so abrupt.

I moved to Chicago in October, but I was commuting and working remotely — and helping out covering Duke hoops on the road — until the paper terminated that agreement as of today. I knew when we moved the end was near. That was my choice. It was time. I wish it wasn’t so abrupt. It’s been an incredible ride, from covering the Hurricanes’ rise as the beat writer to everything I’ve seen as a columnist — with the Carrier Classic and the Rio Olympics at the top, ahead of Final Fours (nine) and ACC tournaments (18) and (so many) rivalry games and US Opens at Pinehurst. I was at the N&O longer than I ever expected after Sherry Johnson gambled on me back in 2000, long enough to see the Canes win the Stanley Cup and NC State go to the Final Four. That’s a lifetime. I stayed because it’s not only a great place to live, but because there’s no better place than the Triangle to be a sports columnist, nowhere with this passion or this many conflicting loyalties, nowhere that sports are so essential to understanding the culture. It’s been amazing to sit at the intersection of all of that, immersed in it, matching wits with some of the biggest personalities in sports. I wish the good folks at the N&O the best, especially sports coworkers like Chip Alexander (he outlasted me!) and Shelby Swanson. They are among the many great writers there, doing the good work they’ve always done as corporate veers from strategy to strategy. I have the utmost confidence they will all do the best they can for readers as long as they can. The N&O’s DNA remains potent, as much as McClatchy tries to dilute it. This is what I always aspired to do, to tell stories and write a sports column in a place where it matters. I tried to make the most of it. It was a great responsibility to llve up to the legacy of Caulton Tudor, Dick Herbert, Bruce Phillips and Joe Tiede, not to mention NC greats like Lenox Rawlings, Ed Hardin and Ron Green Sr. It’s not what it used to be, when that column was the first thing everyone read in the sports section every morning, but in the Triangle, people still listen. They still care. I’m OK moving on. I gave it a good run. I’m proud of the work and I will miss the people. If we only have so many words in us, I’ve used up most of them. I’m ready for what comes next, whatever it is. And I’m thankful for everyone who was reading all these years, whether you agreed with me or not.

The Game Awards is the exact kind of 'celebration of video games' awards show I would watch, but its literally 50 minutes of trailers every hour. I watched for 15 minutes and the three awards they gave out took up 40 seconds of the show (two of them went to the GOAT Expedition 33)

UVA is -2.5 this Saturday. ACC is so screwed. JMU and NTU/Tulane are in over Duke easily. Maybe MWC champ as well if it's UNLV.

Those tiebreaker rules are changing real fast this off-season (probably moving to H2H then CFP ranking).
