hi! i wrote something for @rewirenewsgroup.com’s campus dispatch about student worker unions and repro justice!

it would make me very happy if you could read it and let me know what you think or, the greatest sign it was good: share it with others!
Analysis: Student Worker Unions Are a Force for Reproductive Justice
In the post-Roe era, student unions are increasingly helping student workers secure access to reproductive health care.

Since we last shared an update on bargaining, we’ve received additional information about management salaries at Rewire.

The TLDR: The pay discrepancy between management and union members is deeply unsettling.

this isn’t new but i do think a lot of faculty who work with graduate students would do well to remember we are not capable of seeing inside of your head and it would benefit you immensely to take the time and be clear about what it is you want and what you have in mind

It has been shown time, and time again, that when you are able to provide basic support for folks, such as UBI, not only are they able to thrive, but there are significant increases in measurable indicators of economic health, such as purchasing power.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

i wonder what would have happened if she had the courage to say this outright while she was alive rather than after she’d passed, and how impactful that may have been in several circumstances.

This will not happen unless the mayor directs CPD to arrest ICE in violation. At this point, he will discover why it is a problem that the CPD does not answer to the mayor. If only some well-organized movement in 2020 had pointed this out.

HAPPENING NOW — This morning, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order establishing “ICE-free zones.”

“That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as grounds for these raids,” Johnson said to applause.

I believe in labor organizing and unions, of which I’m a member.

Yet I don’t romanticize unions. Many are top down, anti-leftist, aren’t antagonistic to capitalism, and have racist members. But they’re legible to many and organized, a good place to start experimenting. Unions are what we make them.

NEWS: Major unions @nationalnurses.bsky.social and @ueunion.org are publicly demanding that the U.S. immediately halt military aid to Israel, recognize Palestinian sovereignty, and intervene “to put an end to the violence, starvation, and injustices being inflicted on the Palestinian people.”
Email text: National Nurses United and UE call for end to military operations, blockade in Palestine
Unions demand U.S. recognize Palestine’s sovereignty and demand that Israeli government end violence, starvation, and injustices on Palestinian people

National Nurses United (NNU), the country’s largest union and professional association of registered nurses, and the United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) — together representing over a quarter million union members — sent a letter today to President Trump to demand that “the Israeli government permanently end its military operations and blockade in Palestine, and that the United States immediately recognize the sovereignty of Palestine.”

“Our unions concur with the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel, which found that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” stated the letter. “The United States must intervene immediately to put an end to the violence, starvation, and injustices being inflicted on the Palestinian people. Email text continued: The attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023 was an atrocity. But Israel’s collective punishment of millions of Palestinians and destruction of Gaza over two years constitute a crime against humanity,” the letter continued. “More than 65,000 Palestinians have been killed, including nearly 20,000 children, while 1.9 million have been displaced and countless others have been severely injured and have lost their family members since October 2023. The death toll includes many of our union siblings, including hundreds of health care workers, media workers, engineers, and civil servants killed on the job.”

The letter concluded with a demand for “urgent action to immediately halt military aid to Israel; secure a permanent and immediate ceasefire that ensures an end to the mass killing and starvation of innocent Palestinian civilians; ensure that the remaining hostages in Gaza and political prisoners in Israel are safely returned home; and recognize Palestinian sovereignty and restore the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.”

the government should not be able to smash into your home and drag you into the street for no reason. it's kind of a core civil right, perhaps THE core civil right.

What DHS pulled in Chicago on Tuesday is wildly unconstitutional. They smashed down almost every door in the building, dragged entire families into the street, and detained people for hours ("Kavanaugh stops").

Ms. Fisher was held for five hours and another senior citizen was held for three hours.
Rodrick Johnson, 67, is one of many residents who were detained by federal agents during the South Shore raid. A U.S. citizen, he said agents broke through his door and dragged him out in zip ties.

Johnson said he was left tied up outside the building for nearly three hours before agents finally let him go.

“I asked [agents] why they were holding me if I was an American citizen, and they said I had to wait until they looked me up,” Jones said. “I asked if they had a warrant, and I asked for a lawyer. They never brought one.”
