These narratives also conveniently ignore that this retrenchment is global, in multiple countries with substantially different cultures, languages, and rights movements. Trans folks are being targeted in Hungary, Russia, China, etc. Did trans people go too far in those countries? Of course not.

It also omits the context that every single civil rights movement experiences backlash that we later look back on as absurd. MLK was a deeply polarizing figure when he was alive and often had majority disapproval. Similarly for women's rights in the 1970's. Reagan rode that backlash to power in 1980
