Taiwanese authorities said they had detained a cargo ship crewed by Chinese nationals, which investigators believe may have severed an undersea communications cable near the island on Tuesday.

things are very bad right now, but the US also has advantages that other backsliding democracies haven't. the best example of this imo is our bafflingly decentralized elections system: there is literally no way for the federal govt to "cancel" a midterm election, bc the feds don't run elections
