UNC Biology had a 3rd terrific tenure talk by Kacy Gordon. They study interactions between germ cells & somatic gonad support cells of C. elegans exploring how genetic signals produce cellular movements & shape changes during development & the reproductive life of the animal 1/2

Very excited to share our very exciting story on how misinherited chromatin affects individual cells to cause a behavior defect in C. elegans (a thread👇) www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

I started to work on MscS-Like proteins 20 years ago, dreaming that they were involved in plant mechanotransduction. And it is becoming more & more clear that they are!

Thanks to @currentbiology.bsky.social I now know that elephantnose fish have something called a "Schnauzenorgan" that is loaded with mechanosensory nerve fibers

Biology is amazing.

Resistance. Refusal. Ridicule. Those are the ingredients to bring down regimes and among them ridicule is arguably the most delicious. The emperor isn't just naked; his goon squad is afraid of an inflatable frog.

Heading to #CSHLDros this week, which means it’s time to get an embroidery project cued up to keep my hands busy while I listen!

I recall Sidney Brenner visiting the Cambridge Genetics Department in 1967/68?on the Mill Road, and telling my Part2 class (9 men and me) that he was going to use this small worm to understand neural development. Fabulous progress from an idea to half a century of achievement.

Since this question came up in class last week on flu vaccination and Guillain-Barre syndrome, I think I’ll mention this tomorrow: “most research indicates that active influenza infection poses a higher risk for GBS, and vaccination may provide protection against it” cc @jackiantonovich.bsky.social
Investigating Guillain-Barre Syndrome and Vaccines: Is There a Link?
Research exploring the link between vaccines and Guillain-Barre syndrome suggests there is a minimal overall risk for GBS associated with vaccination.
